Church history, archaeological interpretations and a festival featuring local snail specialities offer different reasons to visit Vrbica. Those interested in the town’s past can explore its long parish history and prehistoric archaeological finds. If you are travelling for Pužijada, however, it is important to check the specific event date.

Church history, from the parish to the parish church

Vrbica was first mentioned in 1330. During the Ottoman period, a Catholic parish dedicated to Saint Mary was established here, serving several surrounding villages. A large parish church was built in 1793 after the earlier wooden church and rectory had fallen into disrepair. The Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was renovated in 1924.

The history of the Franciscan monastery in the Vrbica area also goes back a long way: a papal decree in Avignon approved it on 16 February 1376, and the monastery was built in 1379. It was abandoned in 1532 and never rebuilt. Records from 1660 state that three ruined church sites in the parish continued to be used for Mass.

Archaeological interpretations and finds

The archaeological sites in Vrbica are interpreted as twin circles associated with the Sopot culture. The western double circle at Vrbica–Drake measures 173 by 176 metres, while the eastern one at Vrbica–Barićev bostan measures 160 by 165 metres. The western double circle is larger on both stated measurement axes. These measurements provide a specific comparison between the two differently named sites.

A prehistoric site in Vrbica contains Copper Age Vučedol pottery; the material and documentation are held at the Archaeological Museum in Osijek. A separate medieval site is represented by pottery material. The associated material and documentation are held at the Museum of Đakovština.

Nearby archaeological areas include Stara Vrbica, about two kilometres east of Vrbica. Material found there is attributed to antiquity and the Middle Ages. Near Pepelana, east of Vrbica, remains are interpreted as either a prehistoric settlement or a burned medieval village. Prehistoric material, a stone axe and Roman pottery have also been found at Pepelana. The interpretation of the remains is deliberately left open.

Pužijada and traditional singing

Pužijada is held in Vrbica as part of Semeljci Municipality Day, featuring the preparation of snail specialities. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, check the specific event date.

Another cultural point of interest is a performance on 3 April 2022: at a parish Mass, KUD Šokadija sang traditional Passion songs in folk costumes and without instrumental accompaniment. The date places this performance in time and makes it a distinct example alongside the history of the churches and the archaeological themes.

Landscape and getting around the town

Vrbica lies at an altitude of 115 metres on the southern slopes of Đakovačka greda. The plateau around the town is cut through by depressions that were once the source areas of local streams. These landscape features add a geographical perspective to Vrbica’s history without implying a particular destination for an excursion.

An announcement dated 9 January 2026 reported that footpaths along Kešinačka and Mikanovačka streets had been completed or reconstructed. Later infrastructure changes may affect the local footpath network; if you are planning your routes, check the current layout.

Choose your stay based on your interests

When choosing accommodation in Vrbica, the purpose of your trip can help guide you: the church history spans everything from the early parish to its buildings and historic sites, while the archaeological themes include prehistoric interpretations, finds and the surrounding area. If you are visiting for Pužijada, check the event date before booking. This way, your choice reflects your own interests rather than assuming a festival date or a particular combination of visits.
