Belišće combines a river landscape with the legacy of its industrial history. Historic houses, a monument to the former narrow-gauge railway, and the Gutmann story complement the views of nature. This gives you two distinct interests to choose from when planning your trip: a cycling tour or the town’s architectural and industrial history.

River Landscape and Cycling

Belišće lies on the flat Pannonian Plain, alongside the Drava, Karašica, and Vučica rivers. Green spaces, parks, forests, and water resources support a diverse range of plant and animal life. The “Dravom i sokakom” cycling route starts in Belišće and is 21.3 kilometers long. If cycling is a priority, you can make a point of including the route in your plans. As conditions can change, it is a good idea to check the route’s current condition before setting out.

Industrial History in the Townscape

Gutmann Palace is registered as a Category A cultural monument and serves as an interpretation center for Belišće’s industrial heritage. Next to the palace stands the Gater monument, the first saw frame from the former Gutmann sawmill. Here, you can encounter both a place that interprets the industrial heritage and a monument directly connected to the former sawmill. Belišće’s Memorial Train is a striking monument to the former narrow-gauge railway in Croatia and beyond. Railway history is therefore also among the town’s industrial connections.

Architecture from Several Building Periods

The “Green Houses” are part of the surviving Gutmann colony and the town’s industrial architecture. Built between 1907 and 1910 in a distinctive Alpine style, they are protected as cultural heritage. Seven surviving mansard-roofed houses on Vijenac S. H. Gutmann date from 1890 to 1895. The former administrative headquarters of Belišće d.d., known as Upravna zgrada or “Palej,” was built in 1905. These houses and buildings bring together different architectural styles and periods in the town’s history. Chronologically, the mansard-roofed houses, built between 1890 and 1895, are older than “Palej,” built in 1905, and the Green Houses, built between 1907 and 1910.

Collection, Church, and Local Traditions

The Belišće Museum collection opened on April 30, 1975, in one of the town’s oldest residential houses. The parish church of St. Joseph the Worker houses a statue of the resurrected Christ, created by academic sculptor Josip Poljan. This artwork provides a different point of interest from the industrial architecture.

The name of Pekmez Street also points to the local past: it recalls the former practice of cooking elderberry jam in large cauldrons in the yards of houses. The town’s events include the Fišijada and the čobanac cooking competition. If you are traveling specifically to attend one of these events, check the date in advance.
