Zlatar Bistrica brings together a range of attractions for a stay: a parish church with a distinctive roof, buildings in Lovrečan, a trail through the Šinjačkovina forest and the animals at ZOO Ervenik. Zlatar Bistrica lies at a busy road junction, with a railway line also running through it.

Church Architecture and Building History

The Župna crkva sv. Ivana Krstitelja, the parish church of St John the Baptist, was built in 1997 to a design by architect Giorgio Montina. Its striking tent-shaped roof transitions at the top into a lantern-like form. This roof design provides a specific architectural detail that distinguishes the church from the other buildings in the area. Its year of construction also places it in a different period from the older buildings in Lovrečan.

Dvorac Lovrečan is located near Lovrečan, on a large estate south of the Zabok–Zlatar road. The castle was built at the turn of the 19th century. It is registered as protected immovable cultural heritage under code Z-2086 and classified as secular architectural heritage. For architecture enthusiasts, this offers a distinct focus alongside the religious buildings: the history and classification of a castle dating from around the turn of the 19th century.

The Kapela sv. Lovre is also in Lovrečan. The chapel still stands; its Gothic choir ends in a termination formed by three sides of an octagon. Together with the parish church in Zlatar Bistrica, it offers a comparison of different architectural forms: here, a newer church building with a tent-shaped roof and lantern-like peak; there, a surviving chapel with a Gothic termination. These are specific points of interest if architecture is a particular focus during your stay.

Forest Trail and ZOO Ervenik

The Šumarica Trail leads through the Šinjačkovina forest, which is associated with the former estate of the Šišinački family. Nature and the history of the former estate come together here as two aspects of the same landscape. The trail offers a different theme from the churches and castle described above. If you organise your excursions by interest, you can treat architectural history and the forest as separate highlights rather than combining them into a single type of sightseeing.

ZOO Ervenik is located at Ervenik 86 in Zlatar Bistrica. Its animal collection includes approximately 150 birds, 20 goats and two Vietnamese pigs; the numbers may change over time. Visits are by arrangement, preferably two days in advance. Confirm the appointment again before you travel. This visit requirement makes arranging a time in advance an important planning step if you wish to include the animals in your stay.

The attractions appeal to different interests: the parish church’s roof design, the history and protected status of Dvorac Lovrečan, the chapel’s Gothic choir and the trail through Šinjačkovina. When choosing accommodation, you can consider which of these themes matters most for your trip. Treat a visit to ZOO Ervenik as a separate activity that needs to be arranged in advance.
