Karlovac can be explored through its rivers and its fortified urban history. The Kupa and Korana are in the city centre; the Mrežnica and Dobra are farther out. You’ll need a car or bicycle for a short visit to the two outlying rivers.
Rivers, Routes and Activities
The Kupa promenade is about ten kilometres long; allow roughly two hours for a leisurely walk along it. Hiking symbols and direction signs mark the route. Walking time and trail conditions may vary.
A historic walking route connects Dubovac Castle, the fortified old town, 19th-century parks and Aquatika. It follows a tree-shaded promenade and the banks of the Kupa before continuing through the old town centre and Vrbanić Gardens. The route brings river scenery, historic urban areas and green spaces together.
Aquatika presents the flora and fauna of Croatian rivers and lakes, their geological history, traditional culture and the history of Karlovac’s four river basins. The aquarium layout also follows the river theme: it traces the course of a typical karst river, allowing visitors to experience a river from source to mouth. Two important national cycling tourism routes also pass through Karlovac. Foginovo is listed as Croatia’s first registered river bathing site.
Fortified City and Cultural Sites
Zvijezda is Karlovac’s oldest district. Defensive ditches border the neighbourhood, and remains of a stone fortification wall have been preserved. A museum exhibition is housed in the Branič Tower at Stari grad Dubovac Castle.
The Church of the Holy Trinity is considered a monument of national importance. Together with the Franciscan monastery, it forms a historic and cultural complex administered by the Franciscans since the 17th century. The monastery’s Museum of Sacred Heritage houses 10,000 rare books and sacred art objects. The museum is closed until further notice for renovation. The Karlovac–Turanj Homeland War Museum is housed in a former Austrian barracks in the Turanj district.
Vrbanić Park was designed as a small open-air botanical garden and has been open to the public since 1896. Kino Edison offers another perspective on cultural history: built in 1920, the cinema is a cultural heritage monument in Karlovac and is among Croatia’s oldest cinemas purpose-built as cinemas. It is also considered Croatia’s first VR cinema and screens educational films in VR as well as documentaries. The programme may change.
Getting There and Choosing Accommodation
Passenger trains stop at Karlovac Centar station in the city centre, directly opposite the bus station. The bus station is also centrally located; the fortified old town is about a five-minute walk away. Check timetables before travelling, as services and times may change. The locations of these arrival points and the different positions of the rivers can help you plan your routes through the city.
Seasonal Cuisine
Local restaurateurs offer seasonal themed dishes, including fish, beer dishes, strawberries, mushrooms and chestnuts. What’s available depends on the season and the individual provider. Seasonal cuisine can help you decide which river and cultural themes suit your stay.
