Along the Kupa River, Kamanje reveals both its natural and cultural sides. Vrlovka Cave lies in the village by the river; waterfalls and the remains of former mills shape the course of the Kupa through Kamanje. There are also hiking trails through hills and villages, as well as a parish church with a long pilgrimage tradition. These different themes offer several possible focuses for planning your trip.

The Kupa and Vrlovka Cave

From its source to Kamanje, the Kupa forms the border between Croatia and Slovenia. Downstream from Kamanje, both banks are in Croatia. As it flows through the village, the river forms several waterfalls, where the remains of former mills can still be seen. The river is therefore not just a geographical point of reference, but also part of the landscape to explore around Kamanje.

Vrlovka Cave has been protected as a geomorphological natural monument since 1962. It formed in thick-bedded Jurassic limestone. In a narrow passage behind the entrance, sections of fossil shells can be seen in the rock. Of the 380 metres explored, 330 are equipped for visitors. Bats live in the cave year-round; four species have been recorded there. Vrlovka is also important for biospeleology: Hauffenia media was first discovered here, and the species is classified as Critically Endangered (CR).

Hiking, water and activities

The Vrlovka–Vodenica mountain hiking trail takes 2.5 hours and passes through the surrounding hills and villages. Along the way, you can see traditional wooden houses, some of which have so-called “gank” verandas. A well-maintained hiking trail also starts in Kamanje and leads to a viewpoint at the summit of Vodenica; it is maintained by the Vrlovka Mountaineering Association. The Easter Monday hike up Vodenica is considered a traditional event and is listed in the Croatian Mountaineering Association’s calendar. Check the exact date before your trip.

There are also opportunities for activities on the river: the stretch of the Kupa in the Municipality of Kamanje is considered suitable for canoeing. Check local conditions and providers before taking part. In summer, families and friends use swimming spots along the Kupa. This gives you a choice between hiking and spending time by the river, without prescribing a set itinerary for your visit.

Church and pilgrimage tradition

The parish church of Imena Marijina in Kamanje was built in 1886 and consecrated in 1889. Before that, the chapel of Sveti Filip i Jakov in Reštovo, built in 1704, served as the parish church. The present church has a single nave, a narrower polygonal sanctuary and a bell tower above the main façade. Its architecture offers a distinct cultural point of interest alongside the natural surroundings of the Kupa and Vrlovka.

For more than two centuries, a traditional pilgrimage has been held at the parish church in September on the feast of the Holy Name of Mary. Pilgrims come from the wider Karlovac area and neighbouring Slovenia. If you would like to plan your visit around this occasion, check the exact date before travelling; the Easter Monday hike is a separate traditional event in the annual calendar.

Cycling route and getting there

A 39-kilometre circular cycling route connects Žakanje and Kamanje with Ozalj and the surrounding settlements. It runs mostly along winding forest roads with purpose-built cycle paths. Its length and route give you a concrete basis for deciding whether cycling suits your travel plans. Before reaching Kamanje, the railway line passes through a rocky, wooded gorge along the river, making for a scenic approach to the village.

Planning your stay

When looking for a hotel in Kamanje, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your trip: would you like to centre your visit on the cave’s geology and wildlife, are you more interested in the trails to Vodenica, or would you like to discover the church and pilgrimage tradition? The circular cycling route and the Kupa offer their own distinct attractions. When planning, check the dates of the events mentioned and the local conditions for activities on the river.
