The 36 km circular route “Srce prirode” follows the right bank of the Dobra downstream to Gradišće. Together with archaeological traces in the surrounding area and the landscape of Paurija, it gives the place a distinct focus on cycling and history.
Cycling route and navigation
“Srce prirode” is a 36 km circular route. Its surface is 97 percent asphalt and 3 percent gravel. This gives a clear picture of the route profile: asphalt predominates, but there is also a gravel section. Another cycling route in Karlovac County lists Gradišće along its recommended direction.
For road navigation, the local road L 34062 is identified by the sequence D 3–Mračin–Gradišće–Lipa. This makes the place part of a clearly designated road connection. The cycling route and this sequence of roads offer two different points of reference for planning: the route of an excursion and road navigation.
Archaeological traces and Paurija
Nearby, at Crkvišće-Bukovlje, a late antique hilltop fortress stands above the Mrežnica. Its defensive walls are about two metres thick, and the complex includes at least three towers. In Gornje Bukovlje, the archaeological site of the early Christian Church of St. George is located within a prehistoric hillfort. The two sites therefore represent different historical contexts: a late antique fortification and an early church site within an older hillfort.
Gradišće lies in the landscape of Paurija. In its limestone karst, ancient quarries produced sarcophagi. Finds are also associated with Gradišće near Lipa, including worked iron pieces, cauldron handles and coins. Remains of a prehistoric settlement are also linked to this place. These clues add traces of settlement and stoneworking to the picture of the area’s history.
Landscape in the wider destination of Općina Generalski Stol
For a wider choice of nature and activities, it is worth looking at the broader destination of Općina Generalski Stol. Along the Mrežnica, the landscape includes waterfalls, meadow clearings, farmland, steep wooded slopes, watermills and swimming spots. In the Dobra corridor, there are wooded slopes, meadows, fields, mills, drinking-water springs and waterfalls. These features describe the municipality as a whole, not Gradišće alone.
The Mrežnica in the municipality is suitable for rafting, canoeing, swimming and fishing. So, as well as cycling routes, there are activities on the water to choose from. Toplice Lešće is considered a potential tourist attraction; its 33 °C thermal water is used for both therapeutic bathing and leisure bathing.
