The Municipality of Bosiljevo lies between the Kupa and Dobra rivers, at the entrance to Gorski Kotar. Its karst landscape extends to Mount Družac, which reaches 469 metres; the hill range descends westwards towards the Kupa. The landscape can therefore be understood on two scales: its position between the rivers and the ridge sloping down to the west.

The Karolina: history and cycling

The historic Karolina road passes through Bosiljevo. It was built to connect inland Croatia with the Adriatic coast, in particular Karlovac and Rijeka. The Karolina also connects Karlovac and Bakar; its construction is dated to 1726–1728.

A cycling description from 2018 characterises the Karolina as suitable for cycling due to the low traffic and mountainous surroundings. Road surfaces and traffic conditions can change, so check them before setting out on a cycling trip. Two different perspectives thus sit side by side: the road’s historic role as a link and the mountainous surroundings highlighted in the cycling description.

Cultural heritage in Bosiljevo and Stelnika

In Bosiljevo itself, the old town stands as a monumental fortress on a hill above the village. The Frankopan family had it built in the 15th century. The park forest surrounding the old town is designated a monument of landscape architecture. Its elevated position explains the fortress’s striking place in the village landscape, while the designated park forest draws attention to the design of its surroundings.

A later building phase is represented by today’s Church of Saint Maurus: it was built from 1896 to 1905 and consecrated in 1913.

The remains of Stelnika Castle lie northeast of Bosiljevo; the first written record dates from 1682. At Stelnika, Count Laval Nugent had a Neo-Renaissance-style castle with a park built in 1820. Rare and exotic tree species can still be found at the site today. These trees add a landscape aspect to the castle’s history that remains present at the site to this day.

Festivals and religious traditions

The main feast of the Parish of Saint Maurus is the feast of Saint Vitus on 15 June; the larger pilgrimage takes place on the first Sunday afterwards. In Vodena Draga, the feast of its patron saint, Saint Helena, is celebrated every year with a Mass and a traditional pilgrimage. Thus, a fixed June date followed by a parish feast Sunday sits alongside an annual pilgrimage tradition.

The Chapel of the Assumption of Mary on Gradišće lies near the Municipality of Bosiljevo. A local tradition is associated with it: the Mother of God is said to have disappeared from Gradišće and appeared to shepherds near Bosiljevo.

The traditional Kestenijada was held on 11 October 2025 in Bosiljevo, on the sports field of PŠ Ivan Goran Kovačić. It featured roasted chestnuts as well as products from local family farms and small craft businesses. The festival thus brings together local produce and craftsmanship—a different emphasis from the religious traditions.
