Grabovnica brings together historic churches, an airfield, the Salaj estate and ČazmaGravel routes. Planning involves different questions: Would you like to explore architectural history, visit a seasonal event or learn about the route of a circular trail? Check visitor conditions in advance for events and the airfield.
Churches with different architectural histories
The Chapel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary was built in 1905 or 1906 with contributions from Catholic and Orthodox villagers. It underwent extensive restoration for its centenary. The Church of the Prophet Amos – St Lazarus of Kosovo has an older building history: it was built in 1868 to replace a wooden chapel on St Vid Hill. Its walls were decorated with frescoes. The tower roof collapsed around 2008 and was subsequently reconstructed. The two religious buildings therefore offer a glimpse of different building periods, while their respective histories remain distinct.
The Salaj estate at Christmas and Easter
The Salaj family estate includes an old watermill wheel, a waterfall on the Grabovnica River, lakes, bridges and paths. A 2007 postcard from the town museum documents the connection between the estate and the Salaj Family Christmas Story, with its multicoloured Christmas lights. The event’s name or format may change, so check current dates and programme information.
Easter is also a seasonal occasion: the programme includes performances, children’s games and local food and drink. The Easter setting combines multicoloured lights with Easter eggs. Check dates and programme details before travelling. Christmas and Easter thus represent different seasonal offerings at the same estate; plan your visit for the relevant period.
Airfield and open-air exhibition
Grabovnica Airfield was built in 1986 as an agricultural airfield and is a destination for visitors interested in military exhibits. A report dated 17 January 2025 listed a Lockheed T-33 and a MiG 21 BIS as part of the open-air exhibition. It described the exhibition as open to visitors year-round and free of charge. Before visiting, check whether it is still open to visitors and whether these access conditions still apply. The same report linked the MiG 21 BIS to its active role in the Croatian War of Independence.
ČazmaGravel routes to Grabovnica
The ČazmaGravel routes are circular routes that can be joined at any point. ČazmaGravel 1 reaches Grabovnica after Vagovina and Bojana and passes an airfield, a bioenergy plant and a farm. ČazmaGravel 2 also leads to Grabovnica, turning left at a chapel before passing an airfield, a bioenergy plant and a farm. The routes therefore differ in their described courses: the first includes Vagovina and Bojana, while the second is distinguished by the turn at a chapel.
If you would like to plan your stay around Christmas or Easter, first confirm the relevant programme dates, then look for a holiday apartment in Grabovnica for the confirmed period. If visiting the airfield, it is also advisable to check whether it is currently open to visitors before travelling.
