When planning a trip to Gloria, the wider San José travel region opens up further nature and culture themes. The following places and themes are part of this broader travel region: Parque Nacional La Cangreja focuses on springs, waterfalls and a trail with a stated length; Los Quetzales offers a different nature experience. The museums, meanwhile, offer different ways to explore art and pre-Columbian history. This makes it possible to organise the regional overview around specific interests.

Nature and trails in the wider San José travel region

Parque Nacional La Cangreja protects clear springs such as the Río Negro and Quebrada Grande. Visitors can bathe among naturally formed rocks or admire the water. Small waterfalls with clear water are also part of the park, and visitors can experience them along the trails. La Cangreja thus combines waterways with trails through the park—two aspects that may carry different weight when choosing a nature theme.

The linear Río Negro main trail is approximately 6 km long; the round trip is around 12 km. The longer distance therefore refers to the full out-and-back route, not a second trail. SINAC currently describes the main trail as open, but trail conditions may change. Check the conditions before your visit.

Birdlife and cloud forest in San José

Parque Nacional Los Quetzales is located in Copey District, Dota Canton, in the province of San José and is a special place for birdwatching. These include the quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno), which the IUCN classifies as Near Threatened. The park also includes cloud forest with endemic flora and fauna. More than half of the 53 endemic species recorded for the Savegre Basin are found in the high-altitude, subalpine and alpine vegetation zones.

The two natural areas have different focuses: La Cangreja combines springs, waterfalls and a trail route with an approximate stated distance; Los Quetzales puts birdwatching, cloud forest and endemic species at the centre. If you are choosing what to see in the region based on nature themes, this distinction is more informative than simply comparing the park names.

Art and cultural history in the San José travel region

The collection at Museo de Arte Costarricense comprises more than 6,000 works of painting, sculpture, photography and other art forms. It spans the period from the mid-19th century to the beginning of the 21st century. The museum is housed in a building constructed in the late 1930s in the Neocolonial style, which formerly served as Costa Rica’s first international airport. Here, a wide-ranging art collection and the building’s former function as an airport come together.

Museo del Jade presents permanent and temporary exhibitions. Through jade and other materials, they convey the pre-Columbian history and culture of Costa Rica; the content of temporary exhibitions may change in detail. The difference in focus can help guide your cultural choice: Museo de Arte Costarricense offers a collection spanning different art forms and a period of more than a century, while Museo del Jade explores pre-Columbian history and culture through a variety of materials.
