Montezuma offers two distinct waterside spots: the three Cataratas de Montezuma along the RĂo Montezuma and Piedra Colorada Bay, with its freshwater pool. There are also two routes to the waterfalls, plus activities on the reefs and along the coast.
Location and Getting Around
Montezuma is near the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, 41 km southwest of Paquera and 8 km south of CĂłbano. The town is considered pedestrian-friendly; hotels, restaurants, waterfalls, and beaches are within walking distance.
Waterfalls and Bay
The Cataratas de Montezuma consist of three waterfalls along the RĂo Montezuma. Two routes lead to the waterfalls: the Riverbed Trail and the Canopy Tour Stairs. Planning therefore involves not only the natural attraction, but also choosing a route and considering trail conditions. Trail conditions and access rules may change; check locally before setting out.
Piedra Colorada is a bay reached from Montezuma Beach via the Sendero Verde. There, a small river forms a freshwater pool suitable for swimming and playing; water and swimming conditions may vary. Unlike the Cataratas, the focus here is the pool in a bay. The two spots offer different ways to spend time by the water.
Activities and Evening Plans
Activities in Montezuma include snorkeling on the reefs and boogie boarding; local conditions may vary. Horseback riding adds another option, though availability may vary. This gives you two different choices to plan around: water activities and horseback riding.
Fire shows with live percussion are scheduled for Thursday and Saturday evenings. Ask locally whether they are currently taking place.
