Conte is the main settlement of the indigenous Guaymí Reservation. Two other topics can be found nearby: traditional Ngäbe crafts and the waves at Pavones Beach. This distinction is useful when planning a trip: Conte itself can be understood in terms of its role in the reservation, while crafts and surfing offer separate highlights. Puntarenas provides the broader regional context, with other nature and activity-related attractions.

Ngäbe crafts in the surrounding area

Ngäbe artisans make handwoven bags, dolls, and bracelets, as well as traditional clothing with distinctive colors and patterns. Traditional Ngäbe crafts are made in Altamira and Alto Conte de Pavón. This connects handwoven items and clothing with specific places of production near Conte. The main settlement and the craft-making locations therefore offer different cultural reference points for understanding the destination.

Surfing in Pavones: a seasonal highlight

Pavones Beach has long, distinctive waves and a left-hand surf break where the waves hold their shape. They reach their peak during Costa Rica’s rainy season, from April to October. If you’re considering Pavones for its waves, these months can serve as a seasonal reference point. The surfing highlight therefore has a clear seasonal focus that differs from the cultural attractions in the surrounding area.

Puntarenas as a broader travel destination

In the Osa canton of Puntarenas Province, humpback whale watching is offered near Parque Nacional Marino Ballena. The Osa canton also offers boat trips through the Térraba-Sierpe mangroves. These are distinct nature-related attractions in Puntarenas: whale watching near the national park, and a trip through a mangrove area. Both are part of the broader travel destination of Puntarenas.

Cabo Blanco: trails and birdwatching

Also in Puntarenas Province is Reserva Natural de Cabo Blanco, in the north of the province on the Nicoya Peninsula and south of Montezuma. The reserve covers 1,269 hectares of land and 1,790 hectares of marine area. Its three hiking trails differ in length and route: a 2 km loop, a 1 km trail specifically for older adults and children, and a 10 km trail to Cabo Blanco. The reserve is also a well-known destination for birdwatchers; species found there include frigatebirds, gulls, and pelicans. Before visiting, it’s a good idea to check current trail conditions.

Isla San Lucas: access by sea

Parque Nacional Isla San Lucas is designated in Puntarenas Province as historic-architectural heritage and a zone for sustainable tourism. It can only be reached by sea. Transport and tour services generally depart from the Muelle Turístico del ICT in El Carmen, in Puntarenas Province. If you’re including this national park in your plans, check current tour options and departure information in advance.
