Turrialba brings together a museum featuring archaeology and natural history with gardens, cocoa and regional cheese-making. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether you are most interested in cultural history, plants or culinary experiences: some attractions are in Turrialba, while others are in the surrounding area or within the broader Turrialba destination.

Museum and Archaeological History

The Museo Regional Omar Salazar Obando was founded on November 10, 1995. It is housed in a restored building that has been declared part of the architectural heritage. Its archaeological exhibition features ceramics and stone artifacts that illustrate the way of life of Turrialba’s earliest population groups. The focus is therefore on material finds and the history of the region. The titles “Historia geológica de Costa Rica” and “Mariposas y polillas” refer to additional subject areas: the geology of Costa Rica, and butterflies and moths.

A second archaeological perspective is offered by the nearby Monumento Nacional Guayabo, northwest of Turrialba. The site, with its pre-Hispanic stone structures made from river cobbles, covers around 20 hectares of the protected area. The structures were built between 1000 BC and AD 1400; this period suggests a settlement lasting around 2,400 years. The archaeological site should be distinguished from the larger protected area: within the broader Turrialba destination, the monument covers 233 hectares of evergreen premontane rainforest.

Botany, Cocoa and Cheese in the Surrounding Area

The nearby CATIE Botanical Garden is three kilometers from the center of Turrialba. Its plant life includes native and exotic plants and trees. The individual collections include a garden of native bromeliads, a garden of plants used for medicinal and magical purposes, and a heliconia collection. A 2023 article describes the garden as accessible to people with disabilities. If accessibility is important to your plans, check the current conditions before your visit.

The guided activities also have different focuses. A CATIE bicycle tour includes a tasting of tropical fruits. A tour of the nearby Finca La Montaña covers the history of cocoa and the varieties that have been preserved; it also includes a tasting of the pulp of the cocoa fruit. The tours therefore differ both in topic and in what you get to taste. If you are planning a tour, check the current dates in advance.

Cheese-making offers another link between Turrialba and food: homemade Turrialba cheese is made in the rural community of Santa Cruz on the outskirts of the city. This places the regional cheese in the context of its surroundings, while the CATIE experiences offer specific tours with tastings.

In the Broader Turrialba Destination

Parque Nacional Volcán Turrialba covers 1,256 hectares. In clear weather, panoramic views from several points on the summit extend to the Caribbean plains, the Turrialba Valley, Volcán Poás and the highest peaks of the Cordillera de Talamanca. Weather conditions are crucial for the views. Birdwatching across the broader Turrialba destination also spans different elevations, from the valley to the slopes of Volcán Turrialba. Short outings offer the chance to spot both resident birds and species whose migrations depend on elevation and latitude.

The Iglesia de Aquiares is also part of the cultural history of the broader destination. Built in 1930, it was declared part of Costa Rica’s historical and architectural heritage in 1997. Its furnishings include an old altar imported from Italy and stained-glass windows from Germany. Cabécar culture in Turrialba includes, among other things, the Corn Ceremony, the Cabécar gathering and stories of the ancestors.

The Cascada Aquiares in Santa Cruz near Turrialba offers another perspective on the landscape. The waterfall is set amid nature and coffee plantations. Along with the rainforest area of Guayabo and the viewpoints on the volcano, it highlights the marked contrasts within the broader Turrialba destination, from forest to agricultural landscapes and mountain panoramas.
