Guainia reveals its character through striking contrasts: tropical rainforests and savannas in the Puinawai Nature Reserve, a Ramsar wetland in the Department of GuainĂa, and cultural traces in Coco Viejo and along the RĂo Negro. There is also an ecological trail near Remanso and the opportunity to observe the Flor de InĂrida in its savanna habitat. Nature, history and hands-on experiences offer different perspectives on the destination.

Landscapes shaped by different forces

Located entirely within the Department of GuainĂa, the Puinawai Nature Reserve covers about 15 percent of the department. Tropical rainforests predominate in the area, alongside Amazonian savanna formations and transition zones between savanna and forest. When planning a trip, it is also important to consider visitor access: Puinawai is closed and is not geared toward ecotourism.

The Complejo de Humedales de la Estrella Fluvial InĂrida is also located in the Department of GuainĂa and is designated as a Ramsar wetland. The two names represent distinct aspects of nature: Puinawai is characterized by its vegetation zones, while the Estrella Fluvial InĂrida is defined by its nature as a wetland complex.

Cultural traces on the ground and along the river

The municipality of Coco Viejo is home to ancient petroglyphs, considered evidence of the region’s ancestral cultures. Coco Viejo itself does not have official cultural heritage recognition. The ruins of Fuerte de San Felipe lie on the banks of the Río Negro. They recall the site’s former strategic importance in defending the interests of the Spanish Crown. The distinction is clear: in Coco Viejo, rock carvings take center stage as cultural evidence; on the Río Negro, it is the ruins and their former strategic role.

Hiking trail and plant watching

Near Remanso, an ecological trail leads to the three hills of Mavicure, Mono and Pajarito. Another way to experience nature is at the Jardín Natural de la Flor de Inírida: located in the savannas along the road to Caño Vitina, it offers the chance to observe the Flor de Inírida in its savanna habitat. The two experiences have different focuses: the trail leads to named hills, while the garden draws attention to the flower in its habitat. Check current trail conditions before setting out; for a visit to the garden, it is advisable to make a current inquiry about visiting options.

Events throughout the year

Events also provide a sense of the seasons. The Encuentro de tres culturas is celebrated in November to mark the anniversary of the municipality of Inírida and highlights the cultural work of communities living in the Department of Guainía. The Inírida verano deportivo takes place in February on the beaches of the Río Inírida. The November event is tied to the municipality’s anniversary, while the February event is associated with the beaches of the Río Inírida. If you would like to plan your trip around a celebration, check the dates of the event in question.
