A trip to Nuquí can be planned around coastal activities, nature watching, and regional handicrafts. Experiences are spread across the municipality of Nuquí and its immediate surroundings, with Chocó providing the broader regional context.
Coast, Nature, and Whale Watching
In the municipality of Nuquí, Utría National Natural Park encompasses coral reefs, mangroves, rocky coastlines, and tropical rainforest. These habitats are found in close proximity within the park. Activities include hiking, beach walks, bird and wildlife watching, freshwater swimming, snorkeling, diving, environmental education, and non-commercial photography and video recording.
There are two distinct time frames for humpback whales: they visit the beaches of the municipality of Nuquí every year from July to November. Utría National Natural Park lists whale watching as an activity from June to October; it must be arranged with a tour operator. The park does not organize whale watching or the associated boat trips itself.
Surfing and diving are offered as activities on the municipality’s beaches. Artisanal fishing, ecotourism, and trekking are also among the activities in Nuquí. The range therefore extends from beach and water sports to nature and landscape experiences.
Beaches, Rivers, and Trails
Travel between the municipality of Nuquí’s various beaches is on foot or by boat, depending on the distance, time of day, and tide. Bear all three factors in mind when planning your day. A chingo, a wooden boat made by local residents, offers a trip along a river, where you can observe mangroves and the diverse flora and fauna.
You can kayak on the nearby Joví River; artisanal fishing for Sabaleta is also practiced there, using masks and harpoons. In the surrounding area, the Pichindé waterway leads to the warm waters of Cascada del Amor and Cascada La Roñosa. The latter is 30 meters high and lies in primary forest near the Pacific coast. A beach walk from Guachalito to the corregimiento of Termales passes a thermal spring. At Playa Blanca, you can snorkel and observe fish and coral.
Handicrafts and the Broader Chocó Region
Regional handicrafts are available in the municipal seat of Nuquí: vessels and trays made from Wérregue, household items made from Totumo, and necklaces made from Tagua. This offers a distinct cultural focus alongside nature and water activities.
In the broader destination of Chocó, Utría National Natural Park offers hikes along the Estero Grande, Valle-Utría, and Cocalito routes. The activities available there also include freshwater swimming, snorkeling at Punta Diego, and diving at Punta Esperanza. Check current park notices before setting out on the trails, as trail conditions can change.
