Seven bombproof vaults, a raised platform and two lines of defense give Fuerte de San José in Bocachica a distinctive profile. The town’s fortifications differ not only in their construction but also in their historical function. Anyone interested in Bocachica’s history will find specific details in each structure that reveal these differences.

Layouts and Architectural Features of the Fortifications

The platform of Fuerte de San José houses the Batería de Punta Abanico, with fourteen embrasures, and the Batería Varadero, with seven cannons. The two lines of defense form part of the same complex. Compared with Bocachica’s other fortifications, the most striking difference is the raised platform, as opposed to the separate layouts of the other structures.

Batería del Ángel San Rafael has an irregular crescent-shaped layout adapted to the terrain. A narrow but deep dry moat runs around the structure. Its features include a Casa Fuerte, a Tendal, a watchtower and a cistern. The former garrison kitchen has also been preserved. Both the shape of the terrain and the various parts of the structure are central to this battery.

Batería de Santa Bárbara was built differently: it had a rectangular layout, a moat and a low profile. Part of the structure still remains near the Bocachica pier. The two batteries can therefore be readily distinguished by their documented forms: the crescent layout adapted to the terrain defines Ángel San Rafael, while Santa Bárbara is characterized by its rectangular, low-slung construction.

Historical Roles and Connections

Construction of Batería de Santa Bárbara began in 1752 at Puerta de Remedia Pobres, now part of the village of Bocachica. The fortification had twelve cannons. Details about its design and armament offer a specific insight into the structure, while the surviving section near the pier shows what remains of it today.

Antonio de Arévalo built Batería del Ángel San Rafael in 1762 during the war against the English. Several tunnels connected it to Batería de Santa Bárbara. In the event of an attack, troops could use this route to move between the two fortifications. This connection was part of the structures’ historical defensive function; it does not indicate whether the tunnels are accessible today.

Fuerte de San Fernando also has a specific historical role. At the beginning of the 19th century, during the struggle for independence from the Spanish Crown, it served as a prison for some independence leaders. The fort also included the Santiago and San Juan Francisco Regis batteries, as well as a complex of galleries, countermines and firing points. These could be used to set off controlled explosions in the event of a land attack. Its use as a prison and its underground defensive structures illustrate two distinct aspects of the fort’s history.

Plan Your Trip to Bocachica

Bocachica is on Tierrabomba. A lancha (motorboat) to Bocachica departs from Muelle Turístico la Bodeguita in the Centro Histórico. If you are considering a hotel in Bocachica, plan the crossing as a separate part of your trip. The fortifications give your stay a clear historical focus, while the departure point in the Centro Histórico provides a specific starting point for your journey.

When choosing where to stay, you might first consider whether you want to visit Bocachica primarily for its fortifications. Within this historical theme, it is also worth looking at their differences: San José with its vaults and two batteries, the terrain-adapted design of Ángel San Rafael, the surviving section of Santa Bárbara and the historical use of Fuerte de San Fernando each showcase different details. This lets you plan your trip around the aspects of the town’s history and architecture that interest you most.
