The municipality of Tubará is connected to the Caribbean Sea and the roots of the Indigenous Mokaná people. Cultural sites, petroglyphs, a series of walking routes and coastal activities offer different focal points for planning your trip. You can focus on Mokaná heritage and the landscape, or explore coastal destinations and water sports.

Mokaná Heritage and Cultural Sites

A 2016 description places the Centro Cultural Rebeca Coll near the church, at a viewpoint overlooking the mountains and the region’s landscape. The same description mentions vessels, abstract stone figures and remains attributed to the Mokaná. Among the exhibits was a human skull estimated to be about 600 years old.

Mokaná heritage is represented by 14 recognized communities and a Council of Elders with 200 members. Totumo crafts are also associated with local handicrafts in Tubará. The architecture of the Casa de Cultura Mokaná also incorporates elements of Mokaná culture: a description dated September 21, 2026 highlights perforated design elements and other architectural details.

Piedra Pintada is a sacred site with ancient petroglyphs depicting human figures, animals and geometric motifs. The walking route described in Tubará on March 31, 2023 leads to Piedra Pintada and Chorro de San Luis. According to the description, it offers an opportunity to experience nature and learn about efforts to preserve Mokaná culture.

Walking Trails, Coast and Water Sports

On the Sendero Ecoturístico Chorro de San Luis, a 90-meter stretch of stone slabs leads to the calm, clear waters of Chorro de San Luis Beltrán. The trail in the Corregimiento Corral de San Luis includes a rest area, a tourist viewpoint, a drinking-water station and a parking lot. Plaza San Luis Beltrán is a public space for recreation, gathering and reflection; it opened in December 2023.

Caño Dulce lies in a bay that protects its beaches from sediment. A 2016 description mentions corals, algae and marine plants in the deeper waters off the beach; sea conditions can vary. That same year is relevant to dining: at the time, Caño Dulce was said to have more than 20 restaurants serving seafood such as Lebranche and red snapper. As numbers and offerings may change, check the current restaurant options when planning a specific visit.

Puerto Velero and Caño Dulce are considered hubs for kitesurfing and windsurfing because of their steady winds. In the shallow, sheltered bay of Puerto Velero, Kite Puerto Velero offers kitesurfing lessons for all levels; check opening hours before your visit. Salinas del Rey is considered the continent’s first Blue Flag sports beach. The coastal destinations therefore differ in their described water sports and landscapes, but this does not indicate what wind conditions will be like on any particular day.
