Antioquia is part of the Western Colombian Andes; two national parks illustrate the diversity of its elevation profiles particularly well. At the same time, four important festivities are associated with different municipalities. These perspectives raise different questions: How do the elevations differ, and which of the festivities mentioned appeals to you?

Elevation Profiles in Antioquia

Parque Nacional Natural Paramillo also extends into the Department of Antioquia. Its territory ranges from 125 m above sea level in the north to 3,960 m in the south. Parque Nacional Natural Las OrquĂdeas is located between the municipalities of Frontino, Urrao, and AbriaquĂ, on the western slope of the Western Cordillera and within the biogeographic ChocĂł complex. It covers 28,794 hectares, with elevations ranging from 300 to 3,400 m above sea level. Both national parks are closed.

The elevation ranges overlap between 300 and 3,400 m. Paramillo also reaches lower and higher elevations than Las Orquídeas. This places two distinct geographic profiles side by side: a north–south span with a marked difference in elevation, and an area precisely situated on the western slope and within the biogeographic Chocó complex. So, Antioquia’s place in the Western Colombian Andes does not mean its elevations are the same everywhere. To understand the region, comparing the two profiles is more informative than relying on a uniform idea of an Andean landscape.

Four Festivities, Four Places

Antioquia’s four important festivities include the Fiestas del Plátano in Sabaneta, the Feria de las Flores in Medellín, the Fiestas del Maíz in Sonsón, and the Fiestas de las Frutas in Sopetrán. Each of the four names is thus associated with a specific place. The names themselves are clearly distinct: plantains, flowers, corn, and fruits appear as different themes. As you explore the region’s festive culture, you can start with a particular name or one of the municipalities mentioned.

If one of these festivities is important to your travel plans, check before your trip whether and when it takes place. This keeps the location as a concrete point of reference without assuming there is a fixed event date. Landscapes and festive culture offer different ways to explore Antioquia: the information about the national parks helps you understand its geographic range, while the names of the festivities point to cultural landmarks in several municipalities.

Choose Your Focus

When planning, it helps to first decide what interests you most about Antioquia. Geographically, the focus is on the elevation ranges, the location on the western slope, and the north–south contrast. Both national parks are closed, so they should not be planned as destinations to visit. If you would rather plan around a festivity, you can start with its name and location and check the date in advance.

This does not set a fixed route or a specific length of stay. Instead, it gives you a clear starting question for your own planning: Would you like to understand Antioquia through its geographic contrasts, or is one of the named festivities your main focus? From there, you can choose further travel ideas to suit your interests.
