The wider region around Liaoyuan brings together a range of themes: Pipa culture, several facets of the city’s history, a mountain park with historical connections, and rural activities. When planning, it helps to distinguish dated cultural milestones from nature and leisure offerings—and to confirm dates in advance for seasonal activities.
Pipa culture: several historical points of reference
In 2004, the China Nationalities Orchestra Society awarded Liaoyuan the title “Chinese Hometown of Pipa.” This is distinct from the recognitions received by the Xianshun Pipa School: it was recognized as a “National Pipa Training Base” in 2006, and in 2008 the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism designated it a “National Cultural Industry Demonstration Base.” The school’s Pipa teaching method also received separate recognition, being recognized as intangible cultural heritage at the provincial level in 2009.
A Jilin provincial government profile updated on January 10, 2024, described the Xianshun Pipa School as the only professional Pipa school in China. The profile also stated that the school had been in existence for 40 years and had more than 700 students. Together, these dated details illustrate different aspects of the region’s Pipa profile: an award for Liaoyuan, institutional recognitions for the school, and a recognized teaching method. If you are interested in music and cultural heritage, they help put its development over several years into context.
City history, culture and Longshou Mountain
The Liaoyuan Museum offers a broader range of themes. Its exhibition areas cover Liaoyuan’s city history, the city’s Party history, intangible cultural heritage, clocks and watches, and Manchu culture. Rather than focusing on one topic, it brings several historical and cultural areas together.
Longshou Mountain Park is considered a major excursion destination within Liaoyuan’s urban area. Longshou Mountain, with the Kuixing Tower, is designated a national 3A tourist attraction; the park offers scenic experiences, views over the city, Guoxue cultural experiences and recreation. An ancient city site is also located on the mountain. It was built during the Goguryeo period, remained in use during the Liao and Jin periods, and was used again by the Yehe tribe in the late Ming period. This sequence places the site in several historical periods rather than associating it with just one.
Rural trails and seasonal fruit picking
Yongzhi Village has two routes of different lengths: a three-kilometer boardwalk hiking trail and a nine-kilometer mountain biking route. The options therefore differ both in activity type and stated length. The routes have been described as constructed; check their current condition before your visit.
Also in Yongzhi, a seasonal orchard offers pick-your-own sweet cherries, peaches, plums and grapes. May to October is given as the typical picking season. If you have a particular fruit in mind, it is best to confirm the dates locally before planning your visit: this timeframe refers to the season and does not guarantee picking dates for every fruit.
Rural experiences in the wider area
Kangyuangu combines rural sightseeing with family activities. Its offerings include more than 20 activity facilities, as well as opportunities to see and feed small animals up close. The site is designated an A-level tourist attraction and an AAA-rated rural tourism provider. Its described activity profile is distinct from the cultural themes at the museum and Longshou Mountain.
Another rural destination is Guiquan Valley in Group 3 of Lirang Village, Shoushan Township, Longshan District, Liaoyuan. This eco-leisure estate is 14 kilometers from the urban area. Its concept includes animal husbandry and crop cultivation, along with the development of rural nature and landscape experiences, guesthouse stays and a distinctive alcoholic beverage. These details offer an overview of the estate’s focus; they do not indicate specific accommodation options or their availability.
You can weigh these themes according to your interests: Pipa history and the museum offer cultural highlights, Longshou Mountain combines parkland with a past spanning several periods, and Yongzhi and the rural attractions offer different experiences. For the orchard and trails, it is worth confirming the season or current conditions in advance.
