In the wider surroundings of Wuhai, flocks of red-billed gulls can be seen on the water at Pier 1 of the Wuhai Lake Recreation and Holiday Area every year from late March to early April. If you want to make nature observation the focus of your trip, this recurring springtime window provides a specific reference for when to travel. Other themes in the surrounding area include desert and lake landscapes, wetlands and cultural sites.
Desert and Lake in the Wider Surroundings
The Wuhai Lake, a desert and lake area with a holiday resort, lies in the wider surroundings of Wuhai. An official approval page from 2021 lists two classifications for the Wuhai Lake Recreation and Holiday Area: a recreation and holiday area at the level of the autonomous region, and a national scenic area rated AAAA. The Jinshawan National Desert Park is also located in the wider surroundings of Wuhai, in Haibowan District. The contrast is clear when choosing a landscape theme: a lake and resort landscape near the urban area, or a desert park in Haibowan.
Wetlands and Birdwatching
The broader travel area includes Longyouwan National Wetland Park. There, water ripples among reed beds and flocks of waterbirds. The area includes a 890-hectare saline wetland that has been restored over the years through continuous water supply and greening. The national park was accepted in December 2018; restoration and protection of the wetland were further strengthened afterward. Longyouwan is therefore a distinct wetland focus, thematically different from the desert and lake landscape. The seasonal gull-viewing window at Pier 1 provides a specific timing reference: it falls every year from late March to early April.
Calligraphy, Rock Art and Mining History
Yueyu Book Bar is located in Calligraphy Square at the Contemporary Chinese Calligraphy Art Museum in Wuhai’s Haibowan District. The museum regularly displays works by major Chinese calligraphers; individual exhibitions may change. Yueyu Book Bar, on the shore of Wuhai Lake, is a place for reading, conversation, taking in the view and relaxing.
The cultural and historical offering also includes the Zhaoshaogou Rock Art Site Museum. As part of a school program, students observe a rock painting of a sun god there, dated to approximately 5,000 to 6,000 years ago. A guided presentation at the Wuhai Coal Museum tells the story of Wuhai and its connection to coal mining; it begins with the campaign “万人上山夺煤大会战”. Wuhai’s ecological and cultural tourism areas also offer traditional theatrical forms such as Wuhai Errentai, as well as other performances of intangible cultural heritage.
When choosing cultural experiences, there is a distinction between exhibitions and performances: the calligraphy museum focuses on works shown regularly, while Wuhai Errentai, a theatrical form, is among the offerings in the tourism areas. The historical perspective ranges from the approximate dating of the rock painting to the account of coal mining.
Wine Experiences in Your Plans
A 2024 municipal implementation plan proposed wine tastings and grape-picking activities at Sunlight Tianyu Winery. If you want to plan your trip around these wine-related experiences, check availability in advance. The planning basis differs: an annually recurring period is specified for gull watching, while the wine offerings were proposed in a plan.
