Jingmen can be explored through several distinct facets: historic Democracy Street with its specialties and crafts, memorial sites, archaeological artifacts, and Longquan Park. To plan your visit, you can start by choosing a focus: would you like to prioritize street and urban history, local food culture, or gardens and museums? Each place and attraction has a different emphasis.

Historic Streets and Memorial Sites

Democracy Street in central Jingmen dates back to the Song dynasty and was an important hub on the Jingxiang Ancient Road. Its restored bluestone paving has been preserved; traditional materials and techniques were used to restore the street’s historic appearance. Here, the street’s development and design come together.

Local cuisine and crafts are also part of the street’s character. After it reopened in 2025, Jingmen specialties such as Aizi pastries, Nanqiao steamed buns, and Shipai tofu were offered there. Traditional crafts include dough figurines and sugar painting. Those interested in regional food culture will find specific examples here alongside the history of the street.

The Military-Civilian Cooperation Restaurant is one of the few surviving revolutionary memorial buildings in Jingmen. It was a stronghold on the Xianghe defense line during the War of Resistance Against Japan. After restoration, the building was converted into a memorial hall that tells the story of the resistance against Japan.

The Beer Expo Hall is also located on Democracy Street, on the former site of the Golden Dragon Spring Brewery. It showcases more than 20 beer products and historical photographs. The brewing process is also explained, from malt and hops to the strontium-containing water of Zhanghe. The hall also features a maze made of beer crates and an interactive area where visitors can experience being a “brewer for a day” or spend time in a brewing room. Check which of these activities are currently available before your visit.

Park, Museum, and Performances

Longquan Park combines garden scenes with a dialect wall showcasing distinctive Jingmen features and memorial halls with a strong historical character. The park opened in 1987 and was added to China’s list of 100 famous gardens in 1999. The modernized park is positioned as Jingmen’s cultural living room and includes additional cultural attractions. This makes it a different focus from the street and exhibition history of Democracy Street.

The Guodian Chu Slips are held at the Jingmen Museum. They are considered by the international scholarly community to be the world’s earliest surviving original books. The “Warring States female corpse” is also kept there: it is 200 years older than the Western Han female mummy from Mawangdui and is described as China’s “first wet mummy.” These two collection items offer different ways to engage with Jingmen’s history and archaeology.

The rebuilt North Gate Theater hosted Sichuan opera face-changing, magic shows, and Hubei Dagu drum performances in 2025. These performances complement the museum and memorial themes with the performing arts.
