The Tangshan Nanhu·Kailuan Tourist Area brings together two of the city’s defining sites: Kailuan National Mine Park and the Tangshan Nanhu Scenic Area. The area has been designated a national 5A tourist attraction and is located in central Tangshan. Its distinctive character lies in the juxtaposition of mining history and the transformation of former mining sites. Visitors choosing Tangshan can therefore explore cultural history and urban landscapes as related but distinct travel themes.

Nanhu and Flower Sea: A Changing Landscape

Nanhu lies in southern Tangshan, near the city centre. Originally, the area covered 1,800 hectares of mining subsidence land. Since 1997, it has undergone extensive rehabilitation and been transformed into a green urban landscape with bodies of water, lush vegetation and numerous waterbirds. This development shapes Nanhu’s character: the former mining area became the starting point for an urban landscape in which water and vegetation are central elements. For trip planning, this focus differs from the history of coal mining at Kailuan National Mine Park.

Tangshan Flower Sea also represents the transformation of a former mining area. It is located on the former Kailuan Mine Majia Gou coal-mining site, on the boundary between Tangshan’s city centre and Kaiping District, and is a large-scale ecological restoration project. Nanhu and Flower Sea can therefore be considered together under the theme of changing landscapes: Nanhu as a green urban landscape with bodies of water and waterbirds, and Flower Sea as a restoration project on a former coal-mining site.

Kailuan: Mining History in the City

The history of coal mining is the focus at Kailuan National Mine Park. No. 1 shaft of the Tangshan Mine, operated by the Kailuan Group in the city, was sunk in 1878. Mechanised mining has taken place there for more than 140 years; the Tangshan Mine was the first mechanised coal mine in mainland China. The date the shaft was sunk and the long history of mechanised mining provide a specific point of reference within Tangshan’s industrial history. This focus differs from that of Nanhu and Flower Sea, where the transformation of former mining areas is the defining feature.

Peiren: Historic Cultural Quarter

Peiren Historical Culture Street offers another urban perspective. The Tangshan Cultural Tourism Group created it as a historic cultural and lifestyle quarter in the centre of Tangshan’s urban industrial historic and cultural area. Period-style architecture, nostalgic culture and modern commercial uses shape the street’s character. It was selected as one of the first national tourism and leisure streets. Peiren thus complements the industrial and landscape themes with a quarter where historic design and modern commercial uses come together.

Connections and Further Themes

A super greenway connects Nanhu and Tangshan Flower Sea. It also passes the Tangshan Industrial Museum, Qixin 1889 Cultural and Creative Industrial Park, Peiren Historical Culture Street and Kailuan National Mine Park. The route thus links landscape sites with a museum, a creative park, a cultural quarter and a mining park. For planning, it provides a specific reference if you want to explore different sides of Tangshan; each site retains its own distinct thematic focus.

Sport is also among the themes of the Tangshan Nanhu·Kailuan Tourist Area and its surrounding areas. Facilities created there include a football park, an urban football field, a football-themed hotel and a 16.9-kilometre fitness trail. These facilities complement the cultural and landscape sites with sports infrastructure. The football park and urban field offer a different emphasis from the fitness trail, which is 16.9 kilometres long.
