In the city center of Fangchenggang is the Xiwan Tourism Scenic Area, a 4A-rated tourist area. A municipal tourism feature from 2024 describes the combination of sightseeing, leisure, entertainment and health sports there. This combination provides a concrete basis for choosing a destination: Xiwan brings together several visitor and leisure activities in one urban location. If you compare Fangchenggang with other destinations in Guangxi, the area offers a clearly defined mix of different themes.

Fangchenggang: Xiwan and local experiences

In a township in Fangchenggang is Lershan Ancient Fishing Village. There, visitors can experience life in a fishing village and search for seafood along the shore at low tide. The low tide is part of the shore activity described: fishing village life and searching along the shore go hand in hand here. In terms of its theme, the village offers a different focus from the urban Xiwan. If you are particularly interested in fishing village life and this tide-influenced activity, you can consider them as a distinct reason to include Fangchenggang in your travel plans.

Another clearly located attraction is the Fangchenggang Sailing Base, also called the Civic Navigation Center. A 2023 report states that it was selected as a sports tourism demonstration base for the Guangxi region. The base is located at the city beach, north of the Xiwan Tourism Wharf and within the Xiwan Tourism Scenic Area. This gives the sailing theme a precise connection to Xiwan. When choosing a destination, you can weigh the area and its visitor activities, the fishing village character, and its designated sports tourism focus as distinct local themes.

More themes in Guangxi

Guangxi also offers other, distinct areas of interest. In Xing'an County is the 36.4-kilometer-long ancient Lingqu Canal, which connects the Xiang River and the Li River. It was completed in 214 BC as a canal project during the Qin period. The Lingqu Canal is important cultural heritage and a multifunctional water engineering project that serves irrigation, flood control, water supply and tourism. This gives Guangxi a historical water engineering focus alongside Fangchenggang's urban and sports tourism themes.

The descriptions of the karst landscapes also differ: the Guilin Karst component in Lijiang National Park includes tower karst and cone karst. Huanjiang Karst is a cone karst area within the Mulun National Nature Reserve. Those interested in landforms will find both a description featuring two named karst types and an area explicitly described as cone karst in Guangxi.

The Longsheng Longji Terraces represent agricultural heritage: they were created at least 2,300 years ago, and traditional rice terrace farming is preserved there. The Zuojiang Huashan Rock Art Cultural Landscape in Guangxi includes 38 rock art sites on steep cliffs. The meandering Zuojiang River and its tributary, the Mingjiang River, form the geographical setting. The rock paintings date approximately from the 5th century BC to the 2nd century AD and depict the life and rituals of the Luoyue. Guangxi's thematic diversity thus ranges from preserved agricultural practices to rock art and Fangchenggang's local attractions.
