Miles of beaches and waterfront promenades, an expansive park in the city center, and municipal cultural tours give Viña del Mar its many different facets. You can reach the city from Santiago via Ruta 68 or by bus. This lets you plan your journey and decide whether the coast, green spaces or history will shape your stay.

Coast and walks

Caleta Abarca is a centrally located beach with a summery atmosphere. The waterfront promenades are also part of Viña del Mar’s coastal landscape. For a walk along the coast, you can start at the Reloj de Flores: the promenade route extends for about fifteen city blocks. The flower clock was installed in 1962 for the first FIFA World Cup held in Chile and is one of the city’s most photographed landmarks.

People gather at Muelle Vergara, where there are opportunities for fishing and artisanal trade. In summer, free activities open to the community are also offered at Playa del Deporte, including classes, workshops and outdoor gatherings. If you plan your trip for this season, you can take the seasonal activities into account when planning.

Green spaces and gardens

Parque Quinta Vergara covers around 35 hectares of green space in central Viña del Mar. Its many tree species include the Chilean palm, ombú, fan palm, bald cypress, ceibo, arrayán, peumo and Chilean araucaria. The gardens combine paths with sculptures; the Museo Palacio Vergara adds to the park’s tourist attractions.

The park also has a cultural and historical focus: a municipal tour covers the history of the Vergara family, as well as the amphitheater and Sendero de los Poetas. This brings the park’s history and its named sites into focus alongside its green spaces.

Tours and city history

At Cerro Castillo, a municipal tour introduces the hill’s historic buildings, viewpoints, traditional houses and palaces. The Fundacional tour runs through Viña del Mar’s founding district and visits palaces, houses, squares, sculptures and historic remains. The two tours emphasize different aspects: architecture and viewpoints at Cerro Castillo, and the city’s founding history and historic landmarks in the district.

The Agua Santa tour focuses on striking architecture, religious temples and the stories of exceptional women, including writer Maria Luisa Bombal, who shaped the fate of Viña del Mar and Chile. Another municipal tour covers the historic area of Cementerio Santa Inés. It presents the cemetery as a Historic Monument, where the remains of artists, businesspeople and well-known residents of Viña del Mar lie.

Teatro Municipal is also the subject of a municipal tour. It includes the main entrance, foyer, ticket office, box, balcony and gallery, and conveys the venue’s long-standing importance for musical, theatrical and film events. Dates and availability of municipal tours may change; check what’s on offer before your visit.

For your own glimpse into the city’s history, there is also Palacio Rioja: since 1979, it has housed a museum of decorative arts. The museum preserves its original collection of furniture, textiles and decorative objects, offering insights into the life and aesthetics of the early 20th century. In 1985, Palacio Rioja was declared a National Historic Monument.

Summer and getting there

Every summer, Viña del Mar hosts the international song festival Festival Internacional de la Canción, which attracts artists from around the world. Together with the summer activities at Playa del Deporte, this makes the season a special consideration when planning your trip.

Viña del Mar is directly accessible from Santiago via the 120-kilometer Ruta 68. The drive takes about one hour and 30 minutes, including tolls. Another option is a frequent bus from terminals such as Alameda; the trip takes about one hour and 45 minutes. These two estimates give you an idea of travel times using different modes of transport.
