Petorca offers different perspectives on a province: mountain landscapes, rock art, historical landmarks and regional traditions. The Ruta Patrimonial Petorca: Paisajes de Leyenda comprises five sections corresponding to the province’s five municipalities: Petorca, Cabildo, La Ligua, Papudo and Zapallar. When planning your trip, you can therefore start by considering which places and themes matter most to you.

Mountain Landscapes and Rock Art

The Altos de Petorca y Alicahue priority area covers 102,301 hectares in the mountain zone of the municipalities of Petorca and Cabildo. Its strongly Andean character is shaped by transverse valleys. This describes a landscape that extends across two municipalities and provides a broad natural setting for choosing your regional points of interest.

The archaeological site of El Arenal is located in the settlement of Pedernal, in the municipality of Petorca. It contains 54 petroglyphs, believed to date approximately to between 2,000 and 500 BCE. The rock art depicts anthropomorphic and geometric figures, animals and celestial elements, as well as hunting, fishing and livestock caravans. If you are interested in the motifs, consider the depictions as a varied glimpse into the visual world of the area.

Another site featuring rock art is Piedra Pintada in Hierro Viejo. It is a rock outcrop with petroglyphs. The two examples mentioned have different characteristics: El Arenal is described as a site with a larger number of quantified petroglyphs, while Piedra Pintada is a rock outcrop. This can help you focus your interest in archaeological traces without combining the sites into a single itinerary.

Nature Watching and Activities

Approximately 80 bird species can be observed in the Pichicuy wetland, including the snowy plover, also known as the Chorlo Nevado. The number of species can vary seasonally. Nature watching is the main attraction here, so the approximate figure is a guide rather than a fixed count for every season.

Activities also vary by location. Hierro Viejo has a circular route suitable for cycling and hiking. Check the conditions along the routes when making specific plans. The waves at Salinas de Pullally in Papudo are considered suitable for surfing; check current conditions before planning a day of surfing. Hiking is possible in Papudo’s inland areas. These details can help you choose among cycling, hiking, birdwatching and surfing based on your interests, without assuming a particular order for visiting the places.

History and Cultural Heritage

In Papudo, the Iglesia Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes was declared a Historic Monument on September 20, 1995. In Petorca, all that remains of an old colonial house near the Plaza de Armas is a lintel made of algarrobo wood, secured with leather straps. These different landmarks offer cultural points of interest for your visit, from a protected church building to a single surviving architectural element.

The narrow Las Palmas tunnel, on the border between the Región de Valparaíso and the Región de Coquimbo, is part of the region’s industrial history. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was a necessary passage for the Ferrocarril Longitudinal Norte railway. If historical sites are of particular interest to you, these landmarks complement the rock art with architectural and transportation history.

In Petorca, the Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de La Merced is considered part of Chilean cultural heritage. It is celebrated on the last Sunday in September, and a carpet of flowers stretches for more than 8 kilometers during the celebration. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the event date for the relevant year in advance.

Regional Specialty and Getting There

La Ligua’s confectionery is considered part of Chile’s intangible cultural heritage. It is made in confectionery workshops there using a process that is almost entirely artisanal. This gives La Ligua its own culinary focus alongside the natural and cultural themes of the other municipalities.

When traveling from the north or south, take Ruta 5 Norte to the turnoff at kilometer 155. The road route to La Ligua, Cabildo and Petorca follows the E-35, while the route to Papudo and Zapallar follows the E-39. When searching for a hotel in Petorca, you can first decide which themes and municipalities you prefer, then tailor your search accordingly. This will help you determine whether mountain landscapes and rock art, La Ligua’s confectionery tradition or activities in Papudo should be the focus of your stay.
