Los Andes can be explored on two scales: the original town plan and the architectural history of individual religious buildings. The square founding layout forms the backdrop for a walking tour through the historic center.

The Founding Plan in the Historic Center

Los Andes was founded on July 31, 1791, under the name Villa Santa Rosa de Los Andes de las Tres Piedras Paradas. The original settlement was laid out within a perfect square: Avenida Independencia bounded it to the east, Avenida Santa Teresa to the west, Avenida Argentina to the north, and Avenida Chacabuco to the south. The founding date, original name, and orientation of the four sides are part of a connected urban history. Each of the four avenues corresponds to one side of the square; their alignment with the cardinal directions makes the plan understandable as a spatial arrangement. This allows the founding layout to be read as a cohesive scheme rather than simply as a list of street names.

The Centro Histórico and Plaza de Armas offer a walking tour through the founding grid. The route passes public buildings, local businesses, Iglesia Santa Rosa, and historic buildings. These stops can be seen as different facets of the city: public places, commerce, and religious architecture complement the view of the town plan. Visitors interested in urban history can thus gain a spatial perspective that goes beyond individual buildings.

The Former Espíritu Santo Monastery

The former Espíritu Santo Monastery was built in 1924–1925 at Avenida Santa Teresa 389. It is a brick building with exposed masonry, interior arches, and a two-story section; its style is Gothic. Exposed masonry means a wall surface without plaster; together with the brick, the term refers to the building’s surface. Interior arches and the two-story section, by contrast, relate to its architectural form. This makes it possible to distinguish material, form, and Gothic style as different aspects of the architecture.

The Capilla Santa Teresa de Los Andes is associated with the former monastery. It was built in 1937–1938 and declared a National Monument in 1998. Chronologically, the chapel followed the construction of the former monastery; its designation as a monument marks another point in its history. Iglesia Santa Rosa is one of the stops on the historic walking tour, while the Capilla Santa Teresa is associated with the former monastery.

Town Plan and Building History

The town plan and building history appeal to different interests: the walking tour is a good choice if you want to get to know Los Andes through the layout of its historic center; the former monastery and associated chapel offer a more focused look at religious architecture and its chronology. When choosing your cultural focus, it therefore matters whether you would rather explore the urban layout as a whole or individual architectural features. The square layout raises questions about the form of the center, while the monastery’s architecture highlights the materials, interior form, and style of a specific building.
