A four-kilometer cultural route, Rapa Nui symbolism and maritime life give Hanga Roa its distinct character. There are also markets, an annual festival and opportunities to observe wildlife along the coast.

Explore Hanga Roa on Foot

Hanga Roa is easy to explore on foot; a four-kilometer cultural route is designed as a day trip. Trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out. The flight terminal is right next to Hanga Roa, and the transfer to accommodation takes five minutes. This means that planning takes into account both finding your way around town and the specific transfer time after arrival.

Culture Among Platforms and Symbols

At the Hanga Roa cemetery, Catholic traditions meet Rapa Nui symbols and forms of expression. At the Tahai ceremonial center, three platforms face the sea: Vai Uri, Ahu Tahai and Ahu Ko Te Riku. Ahu Ko Te Riku can be recognized by its moai with a pukao. The baptismal font in Santa Cruz Church features a Rapa Nui deity on its base; the upper part is decorated with Rongorongo symbols. Hanga Roa thus offers both a group of ceremonial platforms and religious sites with specific cultural expressions.

Harbors and Activities by the Sea

At the center of Hanga Piko harbor is the Ahu Riata platform. Since its restoration in 1998, it has been home to the only moai standing upright there. Hanga Piko is also a small fishing harbor in Hanga Roa. Artisanal fishing and paddling Polynesian canoes take place in the bay. Near the coast, Polynesian canoes of the Va’a tradition are carried to the shore for training sessions. Caleta Hanga Roa Otai serves as a harbor for small artisanal fishing boats.

Playa Pea is used for surfing. The dive centers in Hanga Roa provide access to the clear ocean and the island’s volcanic seafloor. Individual providers may change; if you want to dive, check in advance which centers are currently available. Sea turtles are also among the wildlife you can observe along the coast: at Playa Pea, you may see turtles approaching the shallow rocks. In the Hanga Roa bay area, you can observe green sea turtles (Honu) swimming freely among traditional boats. Sea turtles are often spotted along the shore at Hanga Piko.

Markets and a Fixed Date in June

The Hanga Roa handicrafts market brings together most of the island’s artisans and offers souvenirs. It also serves as a shopping and sales center for goods made by island residents. The agricultural and handicrafts fair in the heart of Hanga Roa offers local fruit, vegetables and Rapa Nui handicrafts; the daily selection may vary.

Every year on June 29, the feast of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is celebrated on Rapa Nui. It includes a procession to Caleta Hanga Roa Otai, where images of Saint Peter are carried out to sea. There are two different timeframes to consider when planning: the cultural route is designed for one day, while the festival takes place annually on a fixed date. This makes it easy to distinguish a cultural day of your choosing from a stay timed to coincide with the festival.
