Colchane lies in the Andean Altiplano, right on the border with Bolivia. Aymara culture, the townscape and the landscape of nearby Parque Nacional Volcán Isluga give this destination its many facets. If you are planning a stay, you can draw on local cultural experiences as well as the area's varied nature and hiking opportunities.

Townscape and Aymara Culture

SERNATUR classifies Colchane as a tourist attraction of international significance for its folklore: the focus is on spontaneous folk architecture in the form of a town. This classification draws attention to Colchane itself and its distinctive architectural form.

Preparing the soil for quinoa sowing is also part of the community's cultural traditions. This Aymara custom takes place in September, when Pachamama is asked for permission to sow. It is observed in all Aymara settlements in the commune of Colchane. If you are planning to experience this custom, ask locally in advance.

María Choque Mamani, from the town of Colchane, is an Aymara camelid herder, textile artisan and guardian of the high-Andean camelid husbandry system. Textile-related rituals she preserves from her Aymara culture include Inkuña, vistalla and aguayo. Her work thus brings together camelid herding and textile knowledge, along with different aspects of cultural heritage.

A tourism experience invites visitors to learn about Aymara textile art and hear from the women who practice this technique, passed down from generation to generation. The artisans have been awarded the Sello de Excelencia. Confirm locally whether a direct meeting is possible.

Altiplano and Nature in Parque Nacional Volcán Isluga

Parque Nacional Volcán Isluga is located near Colchane. In its high-Andean ecosystem, the national park protects diverse wildlife, including vicuñas, suri and three protected flamingo species. It also connects nature with Aymara cultural heritage, bringing landscapes and cultural themes together in a natural setting.

The Termas de Enquelga are located within the park, at an altitude of 3,900 meters, in the commune of Colchane. Warm thermal springs emerge there, forming natural pools of crystal-clear water. Check current conditions before planning your visit.

Information about two hiking trails differs considerably. The Sendero de la laguna de Arabilla is 1.5 kilometers long, rated easy and listed as taking one hour in total. The Sendero del volcán Isluga is six kilometers long, takes nine hours in total and is considered challenging even in winter. Comparing the trails' length, duration and difficulty can help you plan how much time to allow. Check current conditions in the national park before your visit.

Another natural landscape in the border region is the Bosque de Cactus Gigantes de Ancovinto, located on the slopes of the Ancovinto hills, 30 kilometers from Colchane. The giant cacti grow up to ten meters tall, and the species found there is described as unique. The forest is considered an area with tourism potential.

Getting There and Getting Around the Commune
