Estación de Teno: Monument and Railway Architecture

Estación de Teno is protected as a Chilean historic monument in the “Monumento Histórico” protection category. The designation was declared by Decree No. 23 on February 18, 2017. The station also features a colonial style characteristic of Chilean railway architecture in the central and southern parts of the country at the time. Its protected status and style offer two distinct points of reference: the decree establishes its status as a monument, while the colonial style places the building in an architectural context. For travelers interested in architectural history, this brings a specific monument together with the broader context of railways.

Music and Cultural Work

The Banda Instrumental de Teno was founded in 1974 and consists of around 30 children, young people and teachers from the community. The groups Los Bandoleros, Los Queltehues and Karabeña, among others, emerged from the Banda. Its founding year, approximate membership and the groups that grew out of it give the music theme both a historical and a community connection.

The Corporación Cultural de Teno is located at Avenida Comalle 85. Its activities include theater performances, writing workshops and violin lessons. If you plan to take part in any of these, check in advance which activities are currently taking place.

Pita: From Cultivation to Craftwork

One craft tradition at the community level is found in the Domingo Mancilla sector: pita has been cultivated and processed there for more than three generations. The process runs from harvesting through shredding, drying, combing and spinning to the creation of crafts. In this way, cultivation is linked to several stages of craft production, rather than the focus being only on finished items.

Nearby, in the Teno area, Carmen Gloria also carries on a tradition of weaving with pita that originates locally. Weaving is another aspect of this craft tradition.

Festivals and Their Dates

Semana Tenina is considered the most important tourism festival held in Teno. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the exact dates before making your plans.

At the 2026 Fiesta Tenina, there were more than 90 stalls at the community level offering food, crafts and typical products. This figure refers to the February 2026 edition.

The history of the Payador gathering at Estadio Municipal dates back to 1981; it became well known at the national and provincial levels. If this gathering is the reason for your trip, check the current program separately. The festival information refers to different time periods: Semana Tenina is considered the most important tourism festival in Teno; the more than 90 stalls refer to the Fiesta Tenina in February 2026, while 1981 marks the beginning of the Payador gathering’s history.
