Futaleufú brings together a community cultural space, scenic viewpoints and river activities in the town and its surrounding area. This mix is particularly useful when choosing a destination: you can take cultural offerings, trails with different levels of difficulty and various ways of experiencing the river landscape into consideration. Information about steps, hiking times and how to get there can help you assess individual outings without turning them into a fixed itinerary.

Culture as a Focus

Casa de la Cultura de Futaleufú is a community cultural space. Its offerings include workshops, exhibitions, discussion groups and cultural events. Its work encompasses local culture, intangible and natural heritage, traditional crafts, dance, photography, art and music. These different forms of culture are represented side by side, from crafts and the arts to discussion and events. If you want to include culture in your trip, this is a specific local point of interest alongside the landscape activities.

Viewpoints and Trails

Mirador Torre de Agua offers panoramic views of Futaleufú. The route there follows Laguna Espejo and includes about 300 steps. These steps are a specific consideration when planning your visit. Another viewpoint is Piedra del Aguila: this natural lookout is on a moderately challenging trail about 2.5 kilometers from town. From there, you can see Laguna Pinto, Lago Leal and the northwestern valley.

At Cerro La Bandera, a moderately challenging hike offers views of Futaleufú and part of the northwestern valley; it takes about an hour. The outings described therefore differ in more than just their views: an approximate hiking time is given for Cerro La Bandera, the steps shape access to the Mirador, and the difficulty of the route to Piedra del Aguila is specified.

Rivers and Activities Nearby

Río Espolón rises in Lago Espolón and flows into Río Futaleufú as a tributary. The calm river has a few beaches suitable for families; conditions at the beaches may vary. The closest viewpoint to town is Puente Espolón, about 600 meters away.

Calm floating is also offered on Río Espolón and is considered suitable for families with children and older adults. Check availability with the provider and local river conditions before taking part in this activity. Río Futaleufú offers a different kind of river experience: it flows through the commune of Futaleufú and empties into Lago Yelcho. You can see the river from Puente Gelvez, a little over a kilometer from Plaza de Armas. Río Futaleufú is used worldwide for rafting and kayaking. Calm floating and rafting or kayaking are therefore distinct activities.

Planning Your Arrival and Outings

Access to Reserva Nacional Futaleufú begins in the town of Futaleufú. From there, a gravel road leads toward the border crossing of the same name. The road can be difficult in bad weather, so take this into account when planning your visit.

For overland travel from Chaitén, the route follows Ruta 235 and covers about 150 kilometers. From Coyhaique, head north along the Carretera Austral; the distance is approximately 422 kilometers and the journey takes about eight hours. Road conditions and travel times may change, so it is advisable to check them before setting out. The routes described therefore provide different distance figures to help you choose how to travel; an approximate journey time is given only for the route from Coyhaique.
