Osorno combines a history dating back to its founding in 1558 with a paleontological focus within today’s city limits: Pilauco is located in the Los Notros neighborhood, and a guided walk leads from Parque Chuyaca to the site. When looking for a hotel in Osorno, start by deciding what interests you most: historical periods, the Pilauco finds or the city’s architecture? The following places each highlight different aspects.
City history: from the founding to the museum
The Museo Fuerte Reina Luisa presents the history of Osorno, from the city’s founding on March 27, 1558, to the consolidation of its resettlement in 1808. It also takes into account the role of the Mapuche-Huilliche people. This time span provides a clear framework for this part of the city’s history, connecting several historical periods rather than focusing on just one building.
The history of the Museo HistĂłrico Municipal de Osorno tells a different story: it was founded on October 18, 1946, on the initiative of VĂctor Sánchez Aguilera, director of the Liceo de Hombres de Osorno. The museum is housed in a building dating from 1929. Concrete defines its exterior facade, while the interiors feature fine woods. The dates refer to two different things—the museum’s founding and the year its building was constructed—and give the site both an institutional and an architectural dimension.
Pilauco and the paleontological collection
Pilauco is a paleontological site located within the city, in today’s Los Notros neighborhood, and has existed for more than 12,000 years. The Museo Pleistocénico Osorno displays fossils dated to 15,000 years ago, found at the Pilauco excavation site. This distinction helps you tell the named site apart from the exhibition: Pilauco is the site, while the museum presents fossils and other exhibition materials.
The Museo Pleistocénico exhibition includes dioramas, replicas, interactive modules and representative fossils from excavations to date. These different formats offer another way to explore the subject, distinct from visiting the site itself. The museum is located in Parque Chuyaca; the park is also the starting point for a walk to the Pilauco excavation site, accompanied by a specialized guide. Since this is a guided activity, check in advance for current dates.
Architecture and local crafts
The architecture also has its own distinctive features. Catedral San Mateo is designed in the Neo-Gothic pointed-arch style. Its features include mosaics, a 42-meter-high tower and a copper roof. Along Avenida Juan Mackenna are wooden houses dating from the late 19th century that bear traces of German immigration. They are also the only buildings in Osorno designated as national historic monuments.
The Museo Interactivo de Osorno offers another connection between city history and architecture: it is housed in a modern railway station building inaugurated in 1964. Those interested in crafts will find a different focus at Pueblito Artesanal, also known as Centro de ArtesanĂa Local. Handcrafted works made using traditional methods and typical materials from southern Chile, such as leather, wool and wood, are sold there. The cultural offerings thus range from architecture and historic sites to crafts.
