Arica combines archaeological evidence of the Chinchorro culture with a coastline, striking landscapes and regional products. This gives you a practical set of choices when planning your trip: would you like to focus on the UNESCO components and architectural history, spend time at the beach, or include activities and culinary experiences? The places and travel information below offer several distinct points of reference to help you decide.

Chinchorro Culture and Architectural History

In Arica, the Chinchorro Culture UNESCO World Heritage property includes the components Faldeo Norte del Morro de Arica and Colón 10. Archaeological remains include settlements, cemeteries and dense shell middens. Colón 10 is also part of a large archaeological area on the northern slope of the Morro de Arica. The remains in this area date back more than 6,000 years.

The neoclassical Catedral San Marcos offers a different historical focus. It was commissioned from the Eiffel company and built in 1876 on the site of the previous cathedral, which had been destroyed by the 1868 earthquake. Archaeological evidence and a 19th-century building thus represent different subjects to consider when choosing your visits.

Morro, Beach and Activities

The Morro de Arica is a 130-meter-high rock formation in the Coastal Range. You can reach its summit on foot or by car. Chinchorro offers a different focus: this beach resort is one of the most important in Arica and is a place to sunbathe and surf. The landscape and beach time therefore offer different ways to shape your stay.

The Paseo Cuevas de Anzota, in the vicinity of Arica, offers further activities. Options include hiking, cycling, accessing the caves via stairways, and climbing routes of varying difficulty. For planning purposes, the type of activity is a useful distinction: Chinchorro is a place for sunbathing and surfing, while the Paseo offers a range of outdoor activities and climbing options.

Regional Products and Culture

The Terminal Asoagro de Arica is a market selling fruit, vegetables and typical regional products. The specific vendors and selection may change. The well-known Azapa olives are produced in an oasis about a 35-minute drive from Arica. Regional products are therefore available both at a market in Arica and through olive production in an oasis nearby, offering two possible areas of interest.

The three-day Con la Fuerza del Sol carnival is another cultural highlight of the city. It features Andean dance groups performing dances from the Altiplano, as well as from Afro-descendant communities and the interior of the Región de Arica y Parinacota. If the festival is a reason for your trip, check the event dates in advance.

Getting to Arica

Chacalluta International Airport (ARI) is located 18 kilometers north of Arica. It has daily flights from Santiago (SCL); the flight takes approximately 2.5 hours. Authorized transfer services and taxis take travelers from the airport terminal to the historic center or their accommodation in about 20 minutes. As operational transfer details may change, check the latest information before traveling.
