Ceramics from local archaeological excavations, a fort above the Río Bueno, and a wooden church from the time of the Franciscan mission reveal different sides of Ranco’s history. Coastal areas, island crafts and striking waterscapes add to the cultural discoveries. The destination thus takes visitors from historical collections and buildings to beaches and natural sites.

Museums and buildings tell different stories

The Museo Tringlo Lago Ranco displays ceramic pieces from excavations in the same municipality and tells the story of Lago Ranco’s first inhabitants up to the present day. Its collection thus connects specific finds from the municipality with a longer historical perspective. In contrast, the Museo Arturo Moller Sandrock in Río Bueno focuses on everyday objects used by the Mapuche and during the colonial period. The exhibits include essential items used for defense and communication.

The Fuerte San José de Alcudia adds another perspective on history with a building overlooking the Río Bueno. It was constructed between 1793 and 1795 atop a 50-meter-high ravine and offers sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding area. In Trumao, the Iglesia Misión de Trumao is another historic building: founded at the end of the 18th century, the wooden church was built by settlers from the Franciscan mission. Together, these places reveal different facets of regional history—from collections of everyday objects and ceramics to fortifications and mission architecture.

Beaches, lakefronts and waterfalls

The coastlines can also be compared by length: Bahía Coique has a two-kilometer-long beach with fine sand, while Playa Hueicolla is a five-kilometer-long coastal beach, also with fine sand. If you take the length of the beach into account when choosing, the difference between the two places is clear.

For a different perspective on the lake, the Costanera Lago Ranco features a pedestrian promenade, renovated green spaces and open panoramic views of the lake. Ojos del Huishue offers a contrasting landscape: continuous waterfalls emerge amid dense vegetation along the edges of a 20-meter-high ravine and flow into Lago Huishue. Here, the landscape is shaped not by open lake views but by waterfalls, vegetation and the steep ravine.

Parque Nacional Puyehue includes, among other areas, the municipalities of Río Bueno and Lago Ranco. Access to its trails is free, except for the concessioned trails El Indio, Repucura and La Princesa. Since concession arrangements can change, check the latest information before your visit. Parque Peumayen Río Bueno is also located in the Rucatayo Alto sector of the municipality of Río Bueno, and its visitor facilities include various trails and viewpoints.

Isla Huapi: crafts and seasonal traditions

Isla Huapi can be reached by ferry; check the timetable before your trip. Artisans on the island offer textiles, wood carvings and basketry. A tourism inventory dated 2012 gives Isla Huapi’s population as approximately 600, mostly Mapuche-Huilliche. This figure is from that historical description and is not a current population estimate.

The same inventory lists the Muestra Costumbrista Isla Huapi as an event held on summer weekends. It mentions horseback rides, craft exhibitions, rural music and traditional foods. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the current dates.
