Cañete can be explored from two perspectives: the city offers a tour through more than 500 years of territorial history and several places connected to Mapuche culture; nearby, Parque Anique adds wetlands and hualle forests to the picture. When planning your trip, you can choose how to balance city history, local crafts, market offerings and outdoor activities.

City History and Mapuche Culture

The Ruta Urbana de Cañete is a walking tour of the city. Along the way, you can explore cultural heritage and culture across more than 500 years of territorial history and different periods. Those interested in Cañete’s historical development will find a thematic approach here that considers different periods. Another historical landmark is Fuerte de Tucapel: it was declared a Historical Monument in 1963.

Mapuche connections are also visible at specific places. La Clava is a large metal structure representing the symbol of authority of a Toqui—a Mapuche warrior leader. Visitors can have their photo taken beside the structure. Plaza Caupolicán offers a different emphasis: it honors the Toqui Caupolicán while also highlighting Mapuche culture, urban planning and modern architecture. A symbol of authority and a public tribute thus represent different ways of engaging with the subject.

Nearby, three kilometers south of Cañete, lies the Museo Mapuche de Cañete. The national cultural heritage institution describes its collection as comprising around 1,400 objects. These include tools, symbols of authority, household and ceremonial items, and clothing. The range therefore extends from everyday objects to items with ceremonial significance. You can also buy local, handcrafted goods rooted in Mapuche traditions at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios Mapuche.

Market and Regional Products

The Feria Hortícola de Cañete offers vegetables, fruit and grains as well as merquén, regional cheese, murtilla, digüeñes, Papa Cañetina and organic vegetables. The products are described as fresh and direct from the field; availability may vary. The market offers a distinct glimpse of regional produce. It complements the cultural themes with a tangible selection of foods, without requiring a tasting or culinary tour.

Nature and Activities Nearby

If you want to focus on the landscape and spending time outdoors, nearby Parque Anique offers a different experience from the city tour. The park covers 14 hectares of wetlands and hualle forests, where large native trees grow. It is suitable for a family afternoon; pets are allowed. Outdoors, you can walk, hike, cycle and picnic. Check before visiting whether the activities mentioned are currently available.

To reach the park entrance, the directions lead from central Cañete eastward along Route P-60-R toward Cayucupil, then onto P-560. From the turnoff at a signalized intersection, it is another three kilometers. Check the route before driving, as directions may change. This makes it possible to plan a visit to the park with specific directions, while city history, Mapuche culture and the market offer other options for shaping your stay in Cañete.
