Tierra Amarilla offers two distinct ways to explore its local history: the historic civic center, with its church and plaza, and the former railway station, now home to a museum. Together, these two themes give the town a distinctive cultural character.

Plaza and Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Loreto

Plaza de la Independencia and Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Loreto are both located in the historic civic center of Tierra Amarilla, opposite Avenida Miguel Lemeur. The church is one of the center’s significant cultural and architectural landmarks. Its classification as neo-Gothic identifies its architectural style, making it a notable point of interest for anyone interested in the town’s architectural history.

Construction of Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Loreto began in 1896 and was completed in 1904. The two years mark different stages: the start and completion of the project. Together with its stylistic classification, they offer a historical and architectural perspective on an important building in the historic center.

Buildings Around the Plaza

Casa Esquina stands on the south side of the plaza. It has an L-shaped floor plan, with a corridor running along the south façade and leading to the courtyard. This description covers both the building’s exterior form and a specific spatial sequence from the corridor to the courtyard. The former municipal building of Tierra Amarilla, also an L-shaped building, is on the north side of the plaza.

The two L-shaped floor plans offer a direct architectural comparison. At Casa Esquina, the connection between the corridor and courtyard stands out; the former municipal function helps put the other building in context. Several buildings directly associated with the church and other corner houses are also located around the plaza. The historic center therefore encompasses not only the church and plaza, but also a wider group of surrounding buildings.

Former Railway Station and Museum

Another point of interest is the former Punta del Cobre railway station in Tierra Amarilla. It is located between Ignacio Carrera Pinto and Ferrocarril streets. Of the 17 railway stations that once stood within what is now the municipality of Tierra Amarilla, it is the only one still preserved today. The building therefore represents a broader part of the municipality’s railway history, not just its own architectural history.

Since August 2024, the former station has housed the Museo Interactivo Digital. The museum is a place for interactive learning, preserving cultural heritage, and strengthening the education of children and young people. Its current use as a museum adds an educational and cultural perspective to the former railway station’s history. Check current opening hours and access arrangements before visiting.

The difference can be summed up in terms of your interests: the church, plaza, and L-shaped buildings offer insight into the architecture and history of the center; the former station combines preserved railway heritage with the Museo Interactivo Digital. Tierra Amarilla thus offers more than one perspective on its local history.
