Chile Chico has cultural sites and historic architecture. The public Plaza de Chile Chico is two blocks south of Lago General Carrera; from a viewpoint, you can see across the town and lake. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing these destinations within the town from cultural traces throughout the municipality and an excursion to the Jeinimeni sector.

Culture and community celebrations

The Casa de la Cultura de Chile Chico houses the Museo de Chile Chico, an auditorium, and a multipurpose room. The museum includes fossilized wood, skulls of native animals, human remains, and worked and polished stones. The collection also includes hunting tools used by ancient hunter-gatherer communities that lived on the southern shore of Lago General Carrera. The museum’s holdings thus bring together natural finds and objects connected to the early human history of the lake.

Plaza de Chile Chico is a public square in the town. The annual Fiesta de la Cosecha Comunitaria is held there, celebrating and harvesting cherries and apricots.

During the summer season, the Festival de la Voz Chile Chico is also a gathering place for the community and visitors. If you want to include this festival in your travel plans, check the dates of upcoming editions in advance. The Fiesta de la Cosecha Comunitaria and the Festival de la Voz offer different occasions: one focuses on the cherry and apricot harvest, while the other is a seasonal gathering place.

Historic townscape and views

Calle Simón Bolívar is also locally known as “Calle del Piojo.” It is home to some of Chile Chico’s oldest adobe buildings, including houses with shingle roofs. Only a few of these buildings have been preserved in their original condition. Those interested in the townscape will find here a specific example of Chile Chico’s historic architecture, as well as a reminder that only a few buildings retain their original condition.

Plaza del Viento is a viewpoint on Cerro de las Banderas in Chile Chico. From there, you can see across the town and out over Lago General Carrera. The viewpoint complements the impressions from the streets and the plaza with a perspective that takes in the town and lake together.

Other cultural traces extend beyond the town. Rock paintings and other evidence of Tehuelche culture, which inhabited the area around 5,000 years ago, can be found throughout the municipality. These traces can be seen in caves, beneath rock overhangs, in stone houses, and on rock walls, and are considered evidence of the region’s earliest human settlement.

Getting there and excursions in the surrounding area

Chile Chico is connected by the Carretera Austral and secondary roads along Lago General Carrera. Check road conditions before setting out. The La Tehuelche ferry operates between Chile Chico and Puerto Ibáñez; check the current departure times before your trip.

The Jeinimeni sector of Parque Nacional Patagonia is nearby. From Chile Chico, it can be reached via Route X-753; Lago Jeinimeni is approximately 65 kilometers away. Check current conditions in the sector before setting out.

A cycling tour through the streets of Chile Chico is also offered as a tourist experience. Local cycling conditions may vary. The distinction between exploring the town and taking an excursion to the Jeinimeni sector can help when planning your stay and looking for hotels in Chile Chico: these are different options to consider when planning your itinerary.
