Explore the town of Tarrafal through a range of interests: religious history, local handicrafts and activities along the waterfront promenade. These themes offer an initial guide as you consider what you would like to focus on during your trip.

Culture and Activities in the Town of Tarrafal

Igreja de Santo Amaro de Abade is a historic landmark in Tarrafal and a place of worship for Catholic believers from the region. The church thus combines historical significance with a religious role that extends beyond the town.

Centro de Artes e Ofícios Traz-di-Munti promotes art and local handicrafts. Its offerings include exhibitions and workshops in ceramics, painting and sculpture. If you are interested in a particular workshop, check in advance for current dates.

Outdoor activities are also part of the waterfront promenade. A travel article from 2024 describes beach volleyball and slacklining there. If either option is important to your plans, check in advance whether it is currently available.

More to Explore in the Wider Destination of Tarrafal

The wider destination of Tarrafal offers additional historical and scenic points of interest. Chão Bom is the second main population centre of the Concelho do Tarrafal; one of its highlighted attractions is the Museu da Resistência. The Museu do Campo de Concentração do Tarrafal, also known as the Museu da Resistência, is located in the former Campo de Concentração do Tarrafal. It conveys and preserves the collective memory of the peoples of Cabo Verde, Guinea, Angola and Portugal.

A place in Chão Bom, three kilometres from the town of Tarrafal, played an important role in the struggle for freedom and democracy in Cabo Verde. Farol da Ponta Preta marks a different historical point: it was built towards the end of the 19th century and served as a landmark for ships off the north coast of Santiago. The two accounts point to different aspects of regional history.

Past and present cultural uses also form part of the region’s character. The former Mercado Municipal is now called Mercado Municipal da Cultura. A 2013 inventory lists it as a venue for cultural and leisure activities; this does not make any statement about its current programme.

Landscape and Nature in the Wider Area

Praia de Mangue is an expansive white-sand beach with palm trees and a coconut grove. Turtles regularly nest at Praia de Ribeira das Pratas. The two places thus represent different aspects of the regional coastal landscape.

The endemic Carqueja de Santiago (Limonium lobinii) occurs in the Serra da Malagueta area in the Concelho do Tarrafal. Baía da Fazenda offers a different perspective on nature: a municipal inventory from 2013 describes it as an attraction for many diving enthusiasts, drawn by the diversity of aquatic life.
