A natural bay, white sand and mountains on the horizon define Baía das Gatas. The small settlement is on the island of São Vicente, east of Mindelo. When choosing where to stay, one clear question arises: are you mainly looking for a connection to the beach and water, or are you also interested in the area's musical history? Baía das Gatas can be considered in terms of these different interests.
Landscape and Name
The bay is a natural landscape feature: the beach has white sand, with mountains forming the horizon behind it. The bay, beach and mountain ridge describe different parts of the same coastal landscape. If you are looking for a scenic setting when choosing accommodation, these are concrete features by which to assess the area.
The name Baía das Gatas is believed to derive from the shark species tubarão-gata, which is common in the waters of the bay. This explanation adds a connection to the bay's wildlife to its landscape features.
An Activity on the Water
Baía das Gatas is a suitable place for stand-up paddleboarding. This adds a specific water activity to the landscape. If you are interested, you can consider stand-up paddleboarding as a separate reason to visit, alongside the beach and mountain scenery. Landscape and activity are two distinct interests: one describes the place, the other a possible pursuit there.
Redevelopment of the Waterfront
As part of the completed redevelopment, a waterfront promenade was built along the coast, and new commercial spaces, green spaces, parking areas and a children's playground were added. A 400,000 m² retention basin was also built to prevent water accumulation. The public lighting was completely renewed, with 75 new light poles and two kilometres of low-voltage cables. The project thus combined the development of public spaces with water retention and renewed lighting. It offers a different perspective on the area from the beach and mountains: a transformation of public space.
The Area's Musical History
The first edition of the Festival Internacional de Música da Baía das Gatas took place in Baía das Gatas in 1984. This historical connection ties the festival to a specific place and time. For a trip motivated by cultural interest, it offers a different focus from the bay and beach scenery. The musical history complements the landscape and water activity with a cultural perspective on choosing where to visit.
The landscape features describe the area regardless of which activity you choose. Stand-up paddleboarding, by contrast, is a specific pursuit, while the festival points to the area's history. This makes it possible to distinguish nature, activities and culture as different reasons for choosing the area.
Note on Beach Access
A wooden ramp for people with disabilities was inaugurated on the beach at Baía das Gatas. It is a specific feature of the beach. If you rely on the ramp, check its current condition in advance.
