Pedra Badejo can be explored through its cultural history and landscapes. Largo Catchás evokes the town’s former community life; Monte Vigia and Praia de Porto Fundo represent different landscape features. Music, too, is linked to a specific event in March 2026.
History in the town center and at the harbor
Largo Catchás, an emblematic street, lies in the historic center of Pedra Badejo. It was once an important economic and social center for the community. Among those who worked there were Hiace drivers and sellers of fish and other market goods. Later, market activity moved to Achada Fátima. The Largo’s former role can thus be understood through transport, trade and community life.
Pedra Badejo’s harbor formerly served primarily as a sea connection to the island of Maio. This maritime function adds another historical reference to the story of the Largo.
Music and the 2026 edition
The lineup for the March 2026 edition of 1 Concelho 3 Ritmos, held in Pedra Badejo, included Tcheka, Princezito, Os Tubarões, Ferro Gaita and Meleny Gomes. The edition was described as the 14th, and the festival is also known in the municipality as “3 Ritmos.” A statue of Katchás was also located in the event area for this edition. This gives the music theme a specific local connection to a festival edition with a clearly established date.
Monte Vigia and Praia de Porto Fundo
Monte Vigia lies in the north of Pedra Badejo, in Achada Fátima. A 26-meter-high iron cross stands on the hill, offering wide views over the town and its surroundings. Praia de Porto Fundo is a small cove behind Monte Vigia at Ponta de Santa Cruz. Calm waters and a natural landscape define it. Together, these highlight two distinct landscape features: sweeping views over the town and its surroundings, and a small cove with calm waters.
Santa Cruz: broader cultural and natural context
In the wider destination of Santa Cruz, Carlos Alberto Martins Catchás (1951–1988), known as “Rei do Funaná,” is an important figure in the Funaná movement. He was from the municipality of Santa Cruz, was a musician and composer, founded the musical group Bulimundo, and created and promoted the Funaná movement.
A 2013 tourism inventory reports on the celebrations held on July 25 in the Concelho de Santa Cruz: the municipal day and the patron saint festival in honor of São Tiago Maior, also known as “Nhu Santiago.” Rabelados communities are found in Achada Bel-Bel.
At João Toro, visitors can enjoy wide views of the green Ribeira dos Picos, with its striking coconut palms and banana plants. The stream has numerous birds and endemic plants. These points of interest broaden the picture of the wider destination of Santa Cruz with further cultural and landscape themes.
