Sal Rei brings together cultural history, street art and coastal scenery: the Museu dos Naufragos is dedicated to the islands of Cabo Verde, murals decorate the streets, and Praia Diante is known for its sunset views. When planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish these local attractions from the landscapes of Boa Vista as a broader destination. This makes it clear which experiences define Sal Rei and which lie elsewhere on the island.

Art and history at the Museu dos Naufragos

The permanent exhibition at the Museu dos Naufragos covers three themes: the history and culture of the islands of Cabo Verde, the universal language of art, and a shipwreck survivor’s journey to safety. Its contents also include relics from historic shipwrecks off the coast of Boa Vista, objects from the era of pirate attacks, and items related to the slave trade to America. The exhibition therefore brings together different historical themes.

Mosaics, stained-glass windows, paintings and sculptures illustrate the history of the islands of Cabo Verde. The building itself also has distinctive features: it was built entirely from locally sourced white limestone and volcanic rock. The exhibition themes and the construction can thus be considered as two separate aspects of the museum.

Murals and sunset views

The streets of Sal Rei are decorated with murals. Public artworks can change over time, so the murals are a time-specific detail of the townscape. Praia Diante in Sal Rei is known for its sunset views. The two attractions are distinct: the murals focus on the design of the streets, while Praia Diante offers views of the sunset.

Djeu and the Ponta Espuma Lighthouse

About one kilometre west of Sal Rei lies Djeu, an uninhabited island covering 89 hectares. Its highest point is 27 metres above sea level; Djeu is also designated a natural monument. Its western tip is called Ponta de Espuma. A narrow channel, 500 to 600 metres wide, separates the island from Boa Vista to the northeast. Djeu is therefore a landscape feature distinct from Sal Rei’s townscape.

In the surrounding area of Sal Rei stands the Ponta Espuma Lighthouse, built in 1888 and still in operation. Check its operating status before making a firm plan to visit.

Tours and possible departure times

The Sal Rei Bay tour includes a stop at Djeu Beach, where swimming and snorkelling are planned. Fishing trips depart from Sal Rei. Possible departure times are 8 am to 12 pm in the morning or 2 pm to 6 pm in the afternoon. Confirm the time and whether the trip is operating with the provider in advance, as these details may change.

On Boa Vista, a seasonal four-hour boat tour in the Bay of Sal Rei includes swimming in calm waters. Check current availability for your travel dates.

Boa Vista: more landscapes

Boa Vista offers additional landscape attractions. Praia de Santa MĂłnica lies in the southwest of the island and is more than 11 kilometres long. The Viana Desert is about one kilometre wide and around five kilometres long; its light-coloured sand is mixed with grains of black soil. In the Morro de Areia Nature Reserve, sand dunes reach the ocean. An expansive beach, a desert with its distinctive sand mix, and dunes by the sea thus offer three different kinds of scenery.

You can walk freely and easily in the Viana Desert; follow local visitor guidance. Together with the landscape details, this activity helps you distinguish Boa Vista’s destinations by their individual features rather than treating them as the same as Sal Rei’s cultural and coastal attractions.
