Three municipal interpretive trails, totalling more than 8.4 kilometres, make a distinctive starting point for exploring Montcalm. They are complemented by a winter cross-country ski trail, the Corridor aérobique and the Mont Larose–Weir climbing area, with its long technical routes. This lets you shape your trip around your interests—from nature to cycling to climbing.
Interpretive Trails and Nature
Montcalm’s municipal interpretive trail network includes three trails totalling more than 8.4 kilometres. Wildlife interpretation panels give them a thematic focus, and new viewpoints were added when the trail network was upgraded in 2014. The result combines exercise, nature themes and scenic views. Since trail conditions, panel availability and the condition of the viewpoints can change, check the latest information in advance if these are of particular interest to you.
The Jackrabbit Ecological Reserve is located in Montcalm and covers 750 hectares. The municipality’s nature offerings therefore include both specific trails with wildlife interpretation panels and a large ecological reserve. This offers two different perspectives on Montcalm’s natural environment: exploring a trail network on foot and experiencing nature on the larger scale of a protected area.
Cross-Country Skiing in Winter
Every winter, Montcalm’s cross-country ski trail is free to use for both classic and skate skiing. You can choose between the two techniques. The trail runs from kilometre 29.8 in Montcalm to kilometre 22.9 in Lac-des-Seize-Îles. Since snow conditions and operating conditions vary, it’s a good idea to check the latest trail information before setting out.
Cycling on the Corridor aérobique
Another option is the 58-kilometre Corridor aérobique, a multi-use recreational trail on a former railway line. It is designated for cycling, hiking and cross-country skiing. Its former railway route and variety of uses give the trail its own character, while the activities on offer appeal to different interests.
There are two access points to the Corridor aérobique in Montcalm, both at kilometre 30. Access point 2 offers parking, washrooms, drinking water and food services. Since these amenities may change, check the latest information before heading there. Montcalm also worked with Huberdeau and Amherst to establish three cycling tourism stations along the Corridor.
Climbing and Creativity
The Mont Larose–Weir climbing area has long technical routes. From the parking lot, it’s just a short walk to the climbing area. To climb, you need an FQME membership or, alternatively, a day membership. Since the applicable terms may change, check the current requirements before your visit.
The Groupe d’art de Montcalm adds a cultural touch. It meets on Monday afternoons from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. at the community centre, at 33 rue du Lac-Rond Nord, for painting, watercolour painting, drawing and wood carving. Participation is free. If you’d like to include a meeting in your travel plans, confirm the date before you arrive.
