Ayer's Cliff brings together several distinct reasons to stay: village history along the Literary Circuit, the long-running Expo d’Ayer’s Cliff, the Tomifobia Nature Trail and public Massawippi Beach. To plan your visit, it helps to choose a focus first: are you interested in culture, an event date, outdoor activities or time at the beach?
Village History and Expo
The Literary Circuit is located in the village centre. Five strategically placed panels offer insights into Ayer's Cliff's past. Outdoors, the circuit also tells a story by local author Hervé Gagnon. Together, the panels and the story create a distinct cultural and historical focus: those interested in the village's history will find a topic rooted right in the village centre.
The Expo d’Ayer’s Cliff has a different focus. It has been running since 1845 and is one of the oldest agricultural exhibitions in Québec. Its program ranges from livestock and crop-growing competitions to horse shows, horse races and tractor rides. Local artisans and crafts, programs for children and teenagers, rides, music shows and cultural performances are also part of the event. The Expo attracts about 25,000 visitors each year. If you are planning your trip around it, be sure to factor the event dates into your plans.
Tomifobia Nature Trail and Massawippi Beach
The 19 km Tomifobia Nature Trail connects Ayer's Cliff with Beebe and lies within a 140-acre linear park. The trail length describes the connection between the two places, while the acreage refers to the park. The trail is suitable for cyclists, walkers, joggers and cross-country skiers. This nature and outdoor recreation focus is clearly distinct from the five panels in the village centre: here, the focus is a longer route with several possible uses.
Massawippi Beach is a public beach in Ayer's Cliff. It has a boat launch and a swimming area supervised by a lifeguard. These are two different ways to enjoy a visit to the water: the boat launch and supervised swimming. If supervision is important to your plans, check before your visit whether the swimming area will be supervised on your chosen day.
Ayer's Cliff in the Regional Context
Beyond the individual attractions in the village, Ayer's Cliff is part of a 415 km scenic tourist route in the Townships. This also gives you a regional perspective when choosing the destination: you can choose Ayer's Cliff for its own cultural, nature and beach offerings, or consider it as part of this longer route. When looking for accommodation in Ayer's Cliff, it is therefore helpful to first ask whether your stay is primarily about the village itself or a larger section of the regional route.
