When looking for a vacation rental in Baie-Des-Sables, you can choose your destination based on different interests: coastal scenery, local history, cheese and crafts. The Sentier des Rosiers runs along the St. Lawrence River estuary. The Parcours patrimonial de Baie-des-Sables focuses on the area's past, while local products and workshops offer more to discover.
Along the Estuary
The Sentier des Rosiers is a 5.6-kilometre out-and-back trail. It runs along the St. Lawrence River estuary, from the eastern edge of the municipality of Baie-Des-Sables to Halte du Meunier. The stated distance therefore includes both the outward and return journeys. Picnic tables and benches are available along the trail, along with several access points to the shore. The trail is seasonal, and access conditions may change. Check whether it is accessible during your travel dates before visiting. Baie-Des-Sables also has public access points to the shore; their rules may also change.
Discover History Along Two Routes
The Parcours patrimonial de Baie-des-Sables invites you to discover traces of the past on a route in and around the community. It explores a period when fishing and farming were economic mainstays. The route gives local history its own focus. La Meunerie offers another historical connection: the former grain mill is now home to an antique shop. It has been in existence since 1846; according to some accounts, its history dates back to 1838. The former importance of fishing and farming, and the mill's transformation into a present-day business, thus represent different aspects of local history.
Cheese and Seasonal Tastings
Fromagerie du Littoral in Baie-Des-Sables offers artisanal and farmstead cheeses made from pasteurized cow's milk. The selection includes fresh or aged cheddar, fresh spreadable cheese, a Camembert-style soft cheese, “Le Bris des Vagues,” and a Halloumi-style grilling cheese. “Rayon d’Or” is a semi-firm cheese with probiotics, considered unique in Canada.
Poutine made with the shop's own cheese curds is also available on site. Check whether it will be available when you visit. At Serres René Santerre, visitors can sample Santerre family cherry tomatoes and “Trust” tomatoes during the appropriate season. Since tastings are seasonal and the selection may change, it is worth checking whether they will be available during your travel dates.
Driftwood Creations
Atelier Bertrand is a workshop-boutique featuring creations made from driftwood deposited on the shore of the St. Lawrence River by the waves. These include lamps, vases and candle holders.
Travel Information
For RV travellers, there is a self-service parking area set up by the municipality beside the Centre communautaire Gabriel-Raymond. Fees, capacity and rules of use may change; check the current conditions before using it. When choosing a vacation rental, use your travel interests as a starting point: the seasonal trail along the estuary, the historic route, or regional food and crafts. These are different ways to explore Baie-Des-Sables, not a set itinerary for a stay.
