Saint-Pacôme connects the Rivière Ouelle with a landscape shaped by an agricultural plain, the St. Lawrence River and the forested areas of the Appalachians. A lookout, a historic mill, a crime fiction award and a cinema give the town several concrete points of interest. Saint-Pacôme can therefore be discovered from different perspectives depending on your interests: through its landscape, history or cultural life.
Riverside Scenery and Views
The agricultural plain, the river and the forested areas of the Appalachians offer different geographical points of reference. The Rivière Ouelle flows through Saint-Pacôme and is an integral part of the town’s landscape. From the Belvédère de la Croix, the view stretches farther: from there, you can see Lower Kamouraska, the St. Lawrence River and several of its islands, as far as the Charlevoix region between Cap-Tourmente and Bergeronnes.
The lookout is built around a metal cross erected in 1950. Signs along the Fil Rouge interpretive and information trail explore several themes, adding an interpretive element to the view. If you enjoy taking in the landscape while learning about the local area, you’ll find both here: a wide-ranging view and the topics covered on the signs.
Mill History and Culture
On the banks of the Rivière Ouelle stands the Moulin Casgrain-Lévesque, a water-powered grain mill dating from 1840, in the municipality of Saint-Pacôme. It is one of the few surviving wooden grain mills on the Côte-du-Sud. Its date, material and function give it concrete historical significance: it is not merely an old building, but a preserved mill powered by water.
Another cultural point of interest is the Saint-Pacôme crime fiction award. Each fall, the best Quebec crime novel is honoured there. Visitors can also discover the award’s winners along the Circuit des oriflammes. Those interested in crime fiction from Quebec can explore the winning authors as a theme of the trail, in addition to the award itself.
In summer, Saint-Pacôme offers an outdoor theatrical walking tour. The fall award and the summer tour thus provide different seasonal highlights. If you’d like to plan your visit around the tour, it’s a good idea to check the exact dates in advance.
Cinéma Louise is located in the centre of Saint-Pacôme and is one of the few remaining cinemas in rural Quebec. It adds another cultural venue to the mill, the award and the walking tour: a cinema in the town centre. Together, these points of interest showcase different sides of the cultural offering, from a historic building and literature to film.
Hiking, Cycling and Fishing
Saint-Pacôme’s topography makes it possible to hike and cycle on routes of varying difficulty. When planning, the desired level of difficulty may therefore be a consideration, rather than assuming all routes are the same. The information about the topography connects two activities with different levels of challenge.
You can fish for salmon and trout along the Rivière Ouelle. Seasonal restrictions and regulations may apply, so check the fishing conditions in advance. Saint-Pacôme brings together a range of interests: the river and its views, a glimpse of mill history, cultural offerings and outdoor activities.
