Souris brings together theatre and craft themes with harbour and beach history. This character is especially evident in the Souris Show Hall, built in 1891, the historic lighthouse on Knight Point and the beach at Souris Beach Gateway Park. Contemporary crafts and a seasonal musical excursion are also among the ways to get to know the area.
Theatre and Music at the Souris Show Hall
The Souris Show Hall was built in 1891 by the Benevolent Irish Society. The theatre has 148 seats and a semicircular stage. It presents music and theatre performances from the Atlantic region’s diverse arts scene; individual performances vary. The Show Hall thus brings together the history of the building and a changing programme of stage performances.
Lighthouse, Local History and Beach
The Souris Historic Lighthouse is made of wood and was built in 1880 on Knight Point; from there, it overlooks the town of Souris. The lighthouse houses an interpretation centre about the history of beach glass, the lighthouse, the harbour and the town. Visiting opportunities may vary. If you plan to visit the centre, check current visiting conditions in advance.
The beach at Souris Beach Gateway Park is known for beach glass and shell collecting, and offers views of the harbour and town. Beach glass and local history thus offer two different ways to enjoy your time by the water. Beach conditions may vary.
Crafts and Creative Gatherings
Artisans on Main Souris is an artist-run cooperative. It showcases outstanding handmade work by local artisans from Prince Edward Island. The gallery features visual art, ceramics, fibre work, jewellery, textiles and woodwork. The artists and works on display may change.
Outside the sales season, Artisans on Main Souris serves as a creative gathering place and hosts workshops, painting evenings and open creative gatherings in the gallery and in the community. Programmes and dates vary. This seasonal offering complements the gallery with community activities.
A Summer Excursion from Souris Marina
Every summer from July 3 to September 30, The Fiddling Fisherman offers musical excursions aboard a fishing boat departing from Souris Marina. Operating dates may vary by season; check them for your travel period. A trip aboard the fishing boat offers a different focus from a performance at the Show Hall: here, the music takes place during an excursion on the water.
