A fracture zone in the Earth’s crust becomes a visible part of a hike in Sudbury District: the Fairbank Fault can be seen from a hiking trail in Fairbank Provincial Park. This gives the hike a specific geological connection.

Wetlands, granite ridges and pines

Mashkinonje Provincial Park offers a different kind of landscape. Its rugged terrain includes an extensive wetland complex and long, rolling granite ridges; the park also offers opportunities for hiking. The combination of landforms and hiking options gives this natural area a distinct character.

The difference between these hiking experiences is clear: Fairbank centres on the fault, while Mashkinonje features rugged terrain with wetlands and granite ridges. You can choose a geological or landscape-focused experience, depending on your interests.

Spanish River Provincial Park adds another aspect to the landscape. The area includes a complex of old-growth forests more than 120 years old, with white pine and/or red pine. The age and named tree species give this forest complex a different character from the wetlands and granite ridges in Mashkinonje. The age reference draws attention not only to the tree species, but also to the forest complex’s place in time.

Killarney Lakelands and Headwaters Provincial Park offers a different way to classify a park: it is designated as a “Natural Environment” class park. This classification complements the specific landscape features with a formal park designation.

Geology and history in Fairbank

Fairbank has a historical dimension in addition to its geological feature. The park’s management direction includes sharing stories about people and events from the historic eras of logging and mining. This places a visible geological feature alongside historical themes. For travellers interested in both the landscape and these themes, it is another facet of the park.

Distinguishing canoe routes by starting point and section

Different reference points can help you navigate on the water. Biscotasi Lake is the starting point for three canoe routes: the Spanish River, Mississagi River and Sakatawi. Shakwa Lake and Rushbrook Lake are part of the inner lakes section of the Spanish River canoe route system. The first detail names a shared starting point for three routes; the second locates two lakes within a specific route system. This helps distinguish a route’s starting point from a section of a waterway when you are considering different reference points for your plans.

Another waterway connection is Kawawia Lake. It can be reached by a short portage from the nearby Onaping River system, which is known as a canoe route. In canoeing, a portage is a passage over land; at Kawawia Lake, this short trail provides access. Unlike Biscotasi Lake, the focus here is not a shared route starting point, but access to a lake.

Plan your access

South Rushbrook Old Pine Provincial Park is accessed via Shakwa Road. Check current road conditions before travelling. It is also recommended that you check current trail and route conditions before heading out.
