Midland offers several perspectives for a stay: public art, history at the Huronia Museum and opportunities to spend time outdoors. The different highlights can help you choose: the waterfront trail combines scenic character with historical panels, Little Lake Park is known for disc golf, and the museum features both a village replica and historical collections.

Waterfront trail and park: two outdoor highlights

The Midland Rotary Waterfront Trail is a scenic route of more than eight kilometres. It offers easy access to downtown, the harbour, parks and attractions. Panels along the trail provide information about Midland’s maritime and industrial history; there is also an e-bike charging station along the route. Allow for the trail’s length as a separate time commitment.

Little Lake Park is Midland’s largest community park and has an 18-hole disc golf course. Compared with the trail, the course is a clearly defined activity, while the trail’s length and historical panels are its main features. When choosing an outdoor focus, you can weigh disc golf in the park against the longer waterfront trail and its historical context.

Public art

Midland is home to one of Ontario’s largest outdoor art galleries: more than 30 murals and sculptures are spread throughout the town. For your cultural itinerary, this is a different focus from the Huronia Museum’s exhibition gallery. Artworks in the townscape are set alongside a collection of historical artefacts, allowing you to consider public art and museum exhibits as different perspectives on culture.

Huronia Museum: village replica and historical collection

At the Huronia Museum in Midland, you can see a replica of a “pre-contact” Huron/Ouendat village. It includes a lookout tower, a wigwam and a full-size longhouse. The Huron/Ouendat Village is visited mostly independently; information panels explain different aspects of village life. The largely self-guided visit gives you time to explore those aspects through the panels alongside the village replica.

The museum’s exhibition gallery contains tens of thousands of historical artefacts. These include photographs, Indigenous archaeological objects and artworks by members of the Group of Seven. While the replica focuses on a specific village layout, the gallery brings together historical records from different areas. Alongside the village replica, this collection is a second museum highlight.

Concerts at the Midland Cultural Centre

The Midland Cultural Centre also adds to the cultural options: at concerts, Rotary Hall offers 274 seats in floor and balcony seating. If attending a particular concert is part of your travel plans, check the event dates in advance.
