Golden Lake brings together a distinctive shoreline landscape, Algonquin history and winter gathering places. When choosing a destination and accommodation, it helps to distinguish between the different points of interest: some relate directly to Golden Lake, while others are in the surrounding area or in Renfrew County as a broader travel destination. This lets you focus your search for a place to stay on the themes that matter to you for your trip.

Shoreline, River and Trails

Golden Lake has rocky shoreline outcrops, sandy beaches and clear water. A free public boat launch is maintained at Bonnechere Lodge. If you plan to use it, check its condition before your visit.

In the surrounding area, Beaudry’s Creek can be seen along a section of the Deacon Escarpment Trail. As it flows toward Kilby Road, the creek forms small waterfalls and rapids. The unmarked Deacon Escarpment Trail is a moderate-to-difficult hike; the out-and-back distance to the top is about 2 km. Check access and conditions on site. The provincial Crown land covers 2,200 hectares and rises more than 150 metres above the Bonnechere River Valley.

For orientation in the surrounding area: B101, originally also known as Pakkotinna, runs north from Highway 60 to Highway 62. Its starting point is just north of Golden Lake. The route and the unmarked Escarpment Trail are distinct planning reference points; for the trail, be sure to consider its difficulty and approximate out-and-back distance.

Algonquin History and Culture

In Pikwakanagan (Golden Lake), the Algonquin Veterans Warrior Memorial is dedicated to all Algonquin warriors who served Canada in war and peace. Another perspective is offered by the virtual exhibition Faces of Pikwàkanagàn: it presents a pictorial timeline of the adaptation and continuity of the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan since the designation of Reserve No. 39.

The Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation, an Algonquin community on the shores of Golden Lake and the Bonnechere River, live in the surrounding area. The Algonquin Way Cultural Centre (Omàmiwininì Pimàdjwowin) works to revitalize, reintegrate, promote and protect the cultural traditions, customs, practices, heritage, language and arts of the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation.

Pikwakanagan’s traditional Powwow takes place every year on the third weekend in August. The program includes Algonquin dances, songs and drumming, as well as arts, crafts and food vendors. Check dates and visitor guidelines with the First Nation before your trip. This helps distinguish the annual event from the virtual exhibition’s cultural themes, which are available year-round.

Winter Gathering Places

The Moon Skating Loop is created and maintained for winter gatherings. The skating loop and rinks are located on Island View Drive; parking is available at Island View Park, formerly Goldcrest Lodge, and at Red Pine Camp. Operations are seasonal and weather-dependent, so check ice conditions in advance. The loop is intended for winter gatherings; the location details provided describe where the skating loop and rinks are situated.

A Broader View of Renfrew County

For a broader regional perspective, Renfrew County offers a network of trails that includes rail trails, paved shoulders and county forests. The K&P Trail includes a 21-kilometre section of the former Kingston-&-Pembroke Railway between Renfrew and Calabogie. The section of the Ottawa Valley Recreational Trail in Renfrew County is officially named the Algonquin Trail.

Another nature-focused attraction in the broader Renfrew County travel destination is Petawawa Terrace Provincial Park: this 215-hectare green space features diverse habitats and an abundance of vegetation and wildlife. Its upper and lower trail networks are suitable for hiking, snowshoeing, cycling and cross-country skiing. These details offer a distinct regional point of comparison; they describe Renfrew County, not Golden Lake.
