Curve Lake has a distinct cultural focus: an annual Pow Wow, the Whetung Ojibwa Centre, and the Curve Lake Cultural Centre offer different insights into art, history, and ceremony. When planning your trip, consider both event dates and the different themes of the institutions.

Culture and Dates in Curve Lake

The Curve Lake Pow Wow takes place annually at Lime Kiln Park in Curve Lake First Nation and attracts visitors from across North America. Event dates may change, so check the latest dates before planning your trip around the Pow Wow.

The original Whetung Ojibwa Centre is located in Curve Lake First Nation. Its offerings include crafts, fine art, jewelry, moccasins, leatherwork, and sculptures from Curve Lake First Nation and across Canada. The selection changes over time. This gives the centre a different focus from the Curve Lake Cultural Centre, which presents artifacts and exhibits about storytelling, art, history, and ceremony.

The Cultural Centre also offers workshops where you can learn about making Ojibwa crafts and traditional cultural practices. If a workshop is essential to your trip, check the event calendar in advance for current dates. This lets you plan a visit around an annual event separately from attending a workshop whose dates need to be confirmed.

More Culture and Nature in Peterborough County

The wider destination of Peterborough County offers distinct cultural and nature-related themes that add to the region’s appeal. Petroglyphs Provincial Park contains one of the largest single concentrations of prehistoric rock art in Canada. Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park offers year-round activities, from canoeing and backcountry camping to short hikes. Which areas are accessible may vary depending on the location and conditions.

Hope Mill Conservation Area is located on the Indian River near Lang, Ontario. It is centred around the historic Hope Mill, built in 1835, and offers opportunities for nature walks and exploring Ontario’s heritage. Hope Mill is open Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from mid-April through October; seasonal hours may change. Free tours and sawing demonstrations are offered on published opening days. Since 2006, volunteers with Hope Mill Restoration Volunteers have sawn lumber there using the original water-powered turbines.

Peterborough County’s natural areas also offer different experiences. At Warsaw Caves Conservation Area, seven caves formed thousands of years ago at the end of the last ice age. Trails totalling 15 kilometres pass through forests and over open limestone plains. Canoes and kayaks are available to rent for paddling on the Indian River; rental hours are seasonal, so check them before planning your trip if needed. Squirrel Creek Conservation Area has a free public beach and a free boat launch on the Otonabee River. Winter activities there include snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
