A walk along the waterfront and a visit to a park offer different ways to experience Little Current: the Little Current Recreational Walking Trail runs from the Information Centre past the Downtown Docks to the town centre, while Low Island Park brings together several water and play areas. When planning, it therefore comes down to whether you would rather walk a route or enjoy activities in one place.
Parks and Waterfront Views
Low Island Park brings together a beach area, swimming dock, splash pad and playground. If you’re looking for a visit with a variety of water and play areas, you’ll find this combination in one place.
Turner Park offers views of the Swing Bridge, the town centre and the waterfront. The Port of Little Current’s Downtown Docks are centrally located in Little Current and close to recreational facilities and the waterfront trail; the Little Current Swing Bridge and the LaCloche Mountains form the backdrop there. By comparison, Turner Park offers views of the town centre and waterfront alongside the bridge, while the mountains add a backdrop at the docks.
Explore Little Current on Foot
The Little Current Recreational Walking Trail is about 7 kilometres long in total and can be walked in full or in sections. It runs from the Information Centre along the waterfront and past the Downtown Docks to the town centre. The total length gives you a concrete framework for planning, while the option to walk individual sections also leaves room for a shorter stroll.
Low Island Park is also connected to the Linear Waterfront Walking Trail. The name helps when choosing a route: the approximately seven kilometres refer to the Recreational Walking Trail, while the park connection is part of the Linear Waterfront Walking Trail. This gives you different ways to plan a walk: as a visit to a park with several areas, or as a route from the Information Centre along the waterfront to the town centre.
Swing Bridge: Access and Heritage
The Little Current Swing Bridge is the only road connection to Manitoulin Island. This makes it a clear point of reference for road access. At the same time, the Little Current Heritage Swing Bridge is designated an Ontario Heritage Bridge. The same bridge thus serves a specific access function and holds a clearly identified heritage designation.
A Lookout Just Outside Town
McLean’s Mountain Lookout is just outside Little Current and offers views of the North Channel and Wabuno Channel, with the LaCloche Mountains on the horizon. The mountains appear in two different viewing contexts: on the horizon from the lookout, and as a backdrop at the Downtown Docks. The geographical distinction can help you choose: Turner Park and the Downtown Docks are in Little Current, while the lookout is just outside town.
Plan a Farmers’ Market Visit
The Farmers’ Market is held on Water Street in the town centre on Saturday mornings. Since hours may change seasonally, check the current schedule before making firm plans to visit.
