At Pinery Provincial Park, a beach stretches for nine kilometres. Lambton County lies along the St. Clair River and on the shores of Lake Huron; its landscapes and cultural sites offer different perspectives on the region. Alongside its coastal setting, the area is defined by forests, nature trails and the county’s history.

Coast and landscape

Pinery Provincial Park is classified as a Natural Environment Park. This classification is based on provincially significant landforms and their associated natural, cultural and recreational resources. It shows that the park’s character includes not only its landscape, but also its cultural and recreational aspects.

Further inland, a variety of forest and dune landscapes shape the nature experiences. At Lambton County Heritage Forest, oak savanna meets Carolinian forest. The forest belongs to Lambton County; its network consists of three connected trails with a total length of eight kilometres. At Ipperwash Dunes & Swales Nature Trail, the path leads through Carolinian forest, past sandy ridges and wet depressions that can be crossed via boardwalks. Be sure to plan for seasonal mosquitoes there as well.

Forested Dunes Nature Reserve is part of the Port Franks Dunes & Wetlands Complex. This complex is designated as an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest and an Important Birding Area. Important to know when planning: the trail at Forested Dunes Nature Reserve is not maintained.

Nature trails with different highlights

At Lambton Heritage Museum, the approximately one-kilometre Woodland Heritage Trail combines a loop through the forest with the surroundings of the main museum and its historic buildings. For a different landscape experience, visit Rock Glen Conservation Area: there, walking trails wind through Carolinian forest and offer views of Rock Glen Falls.

Ausable River Cut Conservation Area offers a one-kilometre recreational trail through oak savanna and dunes. Weather permitting, its multi-use trails can be used on foot, with snowshoes or on cross-country skis. The options therefore differ not only in their landscapes: the Woodland Heritage Trail is described as a loop, while the trail at Ausable River Cut is described by its length, surroundings and weather-dependent uses.

Ausable River Cut Conservation Area also features a StoryWalk. StoryWalks are updated in spring and fall. Together with the trails at Lambton County Heritage Forest, the area shows the different ways forests, dunes and oak savanna can be part of a nature outing.

Museums and stories from the county

Oil Museum of Canada is a National Historic Site. It highlights the significance of Lambton County’s contributions to the development of the global petroleum industry. Lambton Heritage Museum takes a broader approach, focusing on artefacts, culture and local history from across the county.

Lambton Heritage Museum has five historic buildings on site: Rokeby School, Cameron Church, Tudhop Home, Beef-ring Slaughterhouse and Ravenswood Blacksmith Shop. The Lambton Gallery offers a thematic exploration of the county’s history; the museum also includes two exhibit halls. Visitors particularly interested in petroleum history can find a focused introduction at Oil Museum, while the museum and gallery at Lambton Heritage Museum explore different aspects of regional local history.

Another way to explore the area’s history and natural history is at Arkona Lions Museum and Information Centre. It houses an extensive collection of Devonian fossils, minerals and artefacts from the surrounding area. In this way, fossils and local finds complement the themes of industrial history and everyday culture with a glimpse into the geological past.

Beverage producers in Lambton County

Local beverage production has its own thematic focus, too: the Cheers to the Coast Passport Program introduces 14 craft beverage producers in Lambton County. The program offers a concrete starting point for travellers who want to discover the region’s producers as well as its coast, nature and heritage.

You can explore Lambton County according to your interests: its coast and parkland, a variety of forest and dune trails, or museums covering topics from the petroleum industry to fossils. The places and themes mentioned offer several starting points for developing travel ideas for your stay.
